Last night at lovely Boston Field in Nelsonville Coshocton and Ironton got together for what turned out to be a very competitive but sloppy game that needed overtime before a winner was determined.
After holding the Redskins to twenty yards on their first series the Fighting Tigers offense toook the field and early it looked like they would have their way with the Redskins defense. The Fighting Tigers offensive line was man handling the Redskins defensive line opening up huge wholes for the backs to run through. The first ten plays on the drive netted Ironton sixty two yards then on play eleven the Fighting Tigers put the ball on the turf and like an alley cat going after a fresh meat of meat the Redskins Drew McNichols pounced on the ball bringing the Redskins rapid fans back to life.
J.J. McKay put the ball on the turf but picked it back up only to have the Fighting Tigers
John Monning slam him down for a six yard loss with 2:47 left in the opening quarter of play. With 1:21 showing the clock the Redskins opted to go for it on fourth and one and it turned out to be the right decision when DominiqueMcCluskey easily picked up the first down.
The quarter came to a close with the teams locked at zero.
11:49 was left in the half when Logan Huebner hooked up with Keith Corbitt to pick up a first down. The Redskins would go with a little trickery with 10:42 left in the half when Huebner gave the ball to DominiqueMcCluskey wqho floated a nice little pass to Joby Henry picking up another big first down. Fifteen seconds later McCluskey busted off a nice nine yard run. The fourteen play eighty three yard drive came to and end when multi talented
Marcus Johnston hit paydirt. The point after kick by Brody Philabaum was no good leaving the score,6-0 Redskins.
Tres Wilks of Ironton coughed up the ball with 9:27 left in the half but his teammate Sam Cramblit saved the drive by falling on the loose ball. Then with 8:03 left in the half the tigers put the ball on the ground again as a hand off was mishandled quarterback Ethan Preston was able to recover the fumble keeping the ball in the Fighting Tiger hands.
With 2:16 left in the half Ironton would hold the Redskins on a fourth and one play getting the ball back to its offense and putting Uncle Mo. Back on its side. Just seconds later the Redskins not only had a 14-0 lead but had Uncle Mo. Back on its side. The chain of events that gave the Skins their 14-0 lead went like this. The Tigers quarterback would scramble around avoiding several would be tacklers only to throw a pick to Zack Shaw. From there McCluskey would go four yards for a score. A two point run by Mclskey ended the chain of events.
The Tigers would use a half back pass from Josh Pancake to John Monning to score from thirty six yards out. Keith Wetzel would make it a 14-7 game with his kick.
The Skins would send Brody Philabaum out for a 44-yard field goal that just missed. The teams went into the half with the score staying at,14-7 Skins.
5:31 showed on the third quarter clock when Brian Warner picked off a pass that was tipped as the Skins quarterback let it go giving the Fighting Tigers the ball at the Redskins eight yard line. From there Ethan Preston took it in to bring Ironton six points closer. The point after kick by Wetzel squared things at 14 with 5:25 left in the quarter.
The Tigers found themself facing fourth and short for the second time in the final quarter and like the first time they opted to punt the ball instead of allowing one of their big backs to use the big offensive line to pick up the first down. A bad snap led to the punt being blocked giving the Redskins a golden opportunity to win the game.
With 1:45 left in regulation and things still tied the Redskins sent in their kicker for a short 21 yard field goal. The kick was wide left leaving the game tied.
The Tigers seemed to play for the tie as their offense was very conservative once again.
In the overtime period the Tigers ran up the gut for a pick up of two, on second down a pitch to the short side of the field went out of bounds for a two yard loss. On third and nine I think the Fighting Tigers tried a screen pass but the quarterback looked a little uneasy as he thre the ball straight to the ground as he was under heavy pressure. The Redskins easily blocked a field goal attempt on the next play to keep things all locked up at 14.
The Skins would work the ball down to the Ironton three yard line and on the next play 6-1 210 pound senior Marcus Johnston bullied his way into the end zone sending the large Coshocton crown intro a thunderous roar that the good people in Athens had to have heard.
