WooHaa!Manaze, How old is your son? Kids develop at different times. I'm just curious if it is too early to push him.

frogflash84It comes down to genetics, a kid might be able to shave a few tenths off of his time, but some people are made faster than others. If your looking for ways to cut a little bit off your time, a proper starting stance and your start out of the box makes all the difference. A average track coach can show you all of this, when I was a hs coach, I made all my linemen do running events to improve everything listed above. Again it all comes down to genetics.

CthelitesPlyometrics! Jimmy can really jump.

said_aouitaLearn how to run properly first. Quick feet and quick turnover. Not bouncing or swaying side to side while running.
Do strides at end of practice once tired focusing on proper running form. Half of the strides are completed backwards. Running backwards immediately improves ones agility and balance.

RocketsfanI got my son the North / South football speed DVD and he really likes it.

cmhs_prideI am not going to throw credentials out there, but I am going to jump in on this conversation. Some interesting points being made. Some good stuff. Some stuff....well...I hope you are not training anybody, lol.
Speed is more genetic than anything else. That is true. But you can develop speed over a period of time through a series of training methods that are proven time and time again. In other words, you may never be Deion Sanders....but you can knock .6 or .8 off of your 40 time with intense concentration on training a certain way to develop speed. Several things apply here.
1. Flexibility- one of the biggest components of speed is range of motion. Dynamic Range of Motion. The ability to seek out and conquer the art of balance and cooridination as well as stability. The ability to strengthen stabilizer muscles around your joints to play a significant role in running form. The ability to contract and lengthen opposite muscle groups to support the full range of motion of a particular joint. Just some of the importances of dynamic range of motion.
2. Running form drills - Drills that allow you to use such techniques as skipping to create an understanding of how to cooridinate the UPPER and Lower body together which is so important. Simple fact.....15% of your speed will come from how you use your upper body when running. Are your arms bent at 90 angles? When one arm is rising up in front of you is the other arm bent at 90 degrees with the elbow popping up and back? Are your hands relaxed so that if I put potatoe chips between your fingers they would not break? Too much tension in the hands equals too much energy being used in unneccessary ways. Is one knee coming up at 90 degrees while the opposite foot/ankle joint is landing under its hip joint....not out in front of it. Obviously it can get difficult to explain this in detail. Actually watching it is always going to be very beneficial. Doing it over and over agin....even mor beneficial. Muscle memory and the power of it is amazing.
3. Other techniques- I can talk forever about this stuff. I breathe it. Plyometrics is outstanding. Careful on the number of footfalls you use per week. Especially with beginners who do not understand where the force or the impact should be generating to....before they explode back up. Age is a factor here as well.
OK....I am stopping here and going to read some more posts. If i don't, I will write a book!!! -
