Can you tell who will be a good football player when kids are young?
-
MANAZEMy son goes to Hill School and they had a play for mothers day the other day. There are some big boys in his class. I know its a good 10 years away but if the other two elementary school have a couple of big kids like Hills does Creek might be dominate again like they were in the late 90s. I also have seen a couple of the kids play soccer in his class and there are at least four that are as fast as lighting. I know we won't know who will be good or not or who will even play football but if the football God is smiling down on Creek the future will be bright.
So my question is do you think you can tell who will be a good football player when kids are in their early school years? -
ManO'WarI guess in some cases you can tell who is athletic, but I have seen a lot of middle school "super stars" that didn't do much at the high school level...and vice versa.

gamauterPlus big and fast do not equal good football players. You have to like that taste of blood in your mouth.

irish_buffaloAfter coaching little league for several years I always tell people...
You can NEVER tell how good a kid is going to be without the pads on. Some kids are athletic and fast and lights out without pads on. Once the pads are on some kids lose their speed, athletic ability, etc. On the flip side there is always that kid that trips on his own feet and has snot running down his chin who winds up being phenomenal once he straps it up. Not in all cases, but you never can tell.
Same thing goes with foreseeing the future. There are PLENTY of jr. high and pee-wee studs who top out in the 6th/7th/and 8th grade. 5'8 155, stronger and faster than everyone as an 8th grader and 5'8 170 as a senior while everyone passed him up as a frosh. Same thing with 'big' kids. Look at their parents and facial hair. -

These kids are at an Indian Creek Elementary school? Looks like the future is bright in Steubenville.MANAZE wrote: My son goes to Hill School and they had a play for mothers day the other day. The_end_of_overlookManaze, no need to waste time worrying, if they pan out big red will scoop them up, hahahaha and claim they moved into the distrcit lol
... now thats funny. -
ManO'WarNo need to claim anything....this thing called Open Enrollment has been going on for over a decade now.
Freedom to Choose! -
The_end_of_overlookYou do realize if it is an open enrollment situation and the student doesn't move into the district they have to sit out a year. Super int. can no longer sign off on these students, actually haven't be able to for 2 schools years.

NAZE, Teach your kids the game. Teach your kids about "heart" and passion for the game. By the time they get to High School, wisdom you gave them will take over. -

Agreed. You never know. Kids develop at different speeds. His interests may change also. The important thing to teach right now is to the basic skills of the game and make sure he understands how to properly manage winning and losing along with teamwork. Make sure time is set aside to get active, whether its playing outside with friends, karate, whatever he likes and gets him active. Deveolping good habits now will go a long way towards his long term success.sonofsam wrote:

My son has done karate for 4 years, which helps a lot with balance, coordination and discipline, and as long as his grades are good, he gets to work out with the middle schoolers, except for weightlifting. -
Con_AlmaGreat athletes don't always equate to great football players. Good football players aren't always great athletes. What is special is when you have a great athlete that is a great football player.

Drums of WarI was 5'10" 255# and pretty atheletic (3 sports) in the 8th grade. I had the high school coaches drooling. I am 5'10.5" 280# now. Some kids grow and develop @ different rates. Don't get too excited about elementary school kids.

thavoiceWhile in HS I did summer activities for baseball in the summer...kids were from going into Kindergarten through going into third grade.
Picking out the ones that were good between those who you think will always bee good can be kinda easy. There are always the kids you notice who are bigger and more mature but you can tell not quiet as athletic...but they do well because they are more mature.
YOu can pick out athletes pretty quick actually.
Now there are kids who flourish later........through hard work and such make themselves a good player...but yea....in baseball at least........at an early age you can def tell those who have "It" and those who dont. -
rmolin73Here is a perfect example even though it is High School. Two kids come in both phenomenal athletes Kid A is 5"9 175 and Kid B is 5"5 140 as freshmen. At the end of their sophmore year and kid A is 5"9 190 while kid B is 5"10.5 185 and still growing. Just because a kid is the stud on the playground does not mean he will be that same stud when he is in High School.
