Tebow, Haden shining at pro day in The Swamp
-
SpeedofsandHaden had a strained back at the combine, he ran 4.39 to 4.46 today, depending on which NFL scout hand timed it. Several big names in The Swamp today, NFL Network is live, and Tebow is on Sportscenter. McShay and Rinaldi say he looks much better than 5 weeks ago.
11:25 a.m. -- And so it begins. Tebow is already doing very well in his throws. I heard one scout say "Wow" when Tebow improvised a run after a fake pass rush and threw on a dime 30+ yards down the field.
11:22 a.m. -- Reflects Scout.com Recruiting analyst Bill Green: "My first introduction to Tim Tebow came when a player I covered in recruiting, current Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline, was going through the recruiting process. Hartline attended a camp on the East Coast, and when he returned he told me 'I just saw the greatest athlete I've ever seen, and he happens to be a quarterback. All the other quarterbacks at the camp were in awe of Tebow. I've never seen anything like this guy at quarterback.' Turns out Mike Hartline was right on the money in his evaluation."

Lovejoy1984However Brandon Spikes basically fell out of the 2nd round today.
-
SpeedofsandI agree HighRoller, I know Spikes played through alot of injuries last season, and he is a good instinctive player, but I always thought he was over rated. Great locker room leader, but on the field Ryan Stamper impressed me more than Spikes.

This was from the report on CNNsi. Seems there are conflicting stories about Hayden's new 40 time.Joe Haden looked good in position drills and displayed tremendous ball skills. His footwork was smooth and very fluid. Haden's 40 time may have been a bit slower than we first reported. A number of scouts have since told us their watches read 4.52 when Haden crossed the line, as opposed to the 4.45 we initially reported.

I agree, definitely a good player, but a 5.0 40 for a LB is almost unacceptable.Speedofsand wrote: I agree HighRoller, I know Spikes played through alot of injuries last season, and he is a good instinctive player, but I always thought he was over rated. Hell in HS as a 6'4" 320 DT, I blazed a 5.2 in the 40 and I wasn't all that athletic, so for someone like Spikes to pull that number is just kinda sad, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get drafted until the 3rd round, or later. -
jordo212000He ran a 5.0 40? are you kidding me?

ytownfootballWas his 40 time ever that slow? Or is it a product of just being lazy?
I would assume that is the question we should be asking. If he's lazy what would you do as a GM thinking of drafting him? -
Speedofsand40's were all hand timed. Between 4.8 and 5.0 for Spikes. The grass was wet from a little rain this morning, and on Spikes' 2nd start he tore a chunk of grass with his cleats, slowing his time. Scouts say they are taking .05 off all times for the wet. He an Dustin Doe were the only linebackers to workout. TE Aaron Hernandez had 30 reps on the bench at 225. Tebow will be in Gainesville for the next week working out individually for NFL teams.

AutomatikJamarcus Russel also "shined" as his pro day.
-
Lovejoy1984Which is why for QB's the pro day is ridiculous. You take anyone who's played QB even a little bit, give them 3/4 months to focus solely on the mechanics/footwork of a QB, and they'll shine at the pro day. Hell I'm sure most everyone here could shine during a QB pro-day, I always prefer they look at game film for QB's as standing back their and shorts and a tshirt is a lot different then having a 300lb DT coming straight for you wanting to tear your head off.
-
SQ_CraziesI doubt if anyone here could go through 4 months of training and impress NFL scouts.

I'm talking Merely throwing the ball, and what not. Not the other drills they do.SQ_Crazies wrote: I doubt if anyone here could go through 4 months of training and impress NFL scouts.
Anyone who played High School QB would be able to do it, but maybe I'm wrong in thinking the Pro day for QB's is pretty pointless. -
AutomatikAll you have to do is hit the receivers in stride. Its completely overblown. No defense...no care.

This was my point.Automatik wrote: All you have to do is hit the receivers in stride. Its completely overblown. No defense...no care. -
SQ_Crazies"All you have to do..."
Bahaha...yeah, and you have to do it well enough to impress NFL scouts. I doubt very highly that anyone here could train for FOUR months and be good enough to impress scouts even this setting. I don't care if you were All-State in high school. -
AutomatikWhere did I say I could do it?
People put WAY too much stock into a throwing workout. Like I said....Jarmarcus Russel had one of the greatest pro day showings EVER. Did you even watch it? I rest my case. -
NonI wouldn't take much from being able to hit guys in stride.
Any solid QB should be able to do that, but the footwork, release point and overall mechanics needed a major retooling after his showing at the Senior Bowl. It sounds like he's made significant improvements. I wouldn't read too much into the bloggers, but the coaches and QB coaches, in particular, their evaluations are key. -

You didn't say it, someone else did. Then you said all you have to do is hit your receivers in stride. Which is true, but you helped me make my point--it's one thing to hit your receivers and have good footwork and mechanics. It's another thing to do it well enough to impress NFL scouts.Automatik wrote: Where did I say I could do it?

I fail to see what Jamarcus Russell has to do with anything, I never disagreed that this is an overrated work out. Although there is some argument there--the scouts want to see it, I doubt any of us who think it's overrated know more than they do. And just because the media has a fit about it, it doesn't mean the scouts are putting as much stock in it as ESPN says. You have to remember, it's an event for the media too. But the argument was whether or not some Huddler could do this well enough to impress a scout enough to get drafted. -
pkebkerEven with the slow time today for Spikes, he might be a steal in the middle rounds...

Mike Mayock with a couple guys who really matter. Zeke Bratkowski and Noel Mazzone.
