NASCAR Best driver of all time.

GoChiefs6 guys on the lead lap at the end of the race.
30 guys on the lead lap at the end of the race.
What part of that makes you unsure whether it was better or worse? -
jpake1I have to go with Dale. Petty is a close second. JJ someday could very well become #1. Four in a row is very impressive, and he's still relatively young.
-
SQ_CraziesThat doesn't necessarily mean the competition is better. I'm not arguing one way or the other, I'm not taking a stance so I don't really understand why you're pushing this?
-
GoChiefsActually..going by numbers..Johnson already is number 1. I mean..he's won the championship in 50% of the seasons he's been in racing!

Why I'm pushing what? Isn't it here for debate? I'm pretty sure it is. So that's what I'm doing..debating.SQ_Crazies wrote: I'm not taking a stance so I don't really understand why you're pushing this? -
SQ_CraziesThat's fine, but I'm not debating with you so I'm not sure why you keep addressing me.
-
GoChiefsUh..maybe b/c you were the one with the post? So I replied to your post?

You can't get an accurate assumption from numbers from past drivers and drivers of today..look at Petty for example..his numbers are:Darkon wrote: Numbers don't matter?
How do you determine the who the best is?
Races - 1184
Wins - 200
Top 5 - 555
Top 10 - 712
now you compare that to Gordon
Races - 582
Wins - 82
Top 5 - 263
Top 10 - 361
Gordon still needs 20 more races before he's raced in even HALF as many races as Petty. How are you going to reach a good assessment of the drivers based on that when one driver has twice as many races under his belt than the other? If you want to go by numbers...it's hands down Richard Petty. Nobody has come close to having the numbers he has.
Yes it's hard to compare era's.
I don't believe Gordon is #1
That is why I put Percentages on each drivers stats.
So since Petty run so many races this makes him #1? He may have run more than anyone ever has. To me this just proves he had money to back him.
David Pearson
574 Starts
105 Wins
301 Top Fives
366 Top Tens
He ran his entire career against Petty. Never raced a complete season(came close like 3 times Years he won title) in 27 years. Can you imagine if he would have been able to run the entire season for that time period. IMO he would have taken a couple of those titles away from Petty. -

When you run in twice as many races..and are still able to maintain the same percentage numbers as the others being talked about..then I'd say yes..that is definitely something to take into consideration.Darkon wrote: So since Petty run so many races this makes him #1? -
NNNNot one person has mentioned Bobby Allison as being in the discussion at all?
Oh, he definitely achieved legendary status for being the poster boy....of course, exactly what part of him is most prominently featured on the poster is what made him a legend.Gardens35 wrote: I think that Tim Richmond falls into the shoulda/coulda list. Leonardo1. Richard Petty
2. Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
3. David Pearson -
DarkonPearson and Petty head to head. 550 times.
They finished first and second 63 times.
Pearson with 33 wins to Petty’s 30.
Petty beat Pearson in those races 289 to 261.
Petty had 291 top fives to Pearson at 289.
By those numbers you would give the edge to Petty.
But I would like to point out that Petty had the sponsorship and money that would give him better equipment.
So is he really better? -
DarkonGordon and Earnhardt Sr. head to head 1993-2000
Starts 256
Gordon 52 wins.
Earnhardt 23 wins.
Top fives
Gordon 129
Earnhardt 101
Top tens
Gordon 166
Earnhardt 160
Poles.
Gordon 33
Earnhardt 9
Titles
Gordon 3
Earnhardt 2 -

The sport has always been about sponsorship/money. If Petty was able to get better stuff..well..I guess we can't fault Petty for that.Darkon wrote: By those numbers you would give the edge to Petty.

But lets face it..during half those years..Earnhardt was exactly the same ol' Earnhardt.Darkon wrote: Gordon and Earnhardt Sr. head to head 1993-2000 -

only someone who thinks NASCAR was invented in 1990 could answer "Gordon" to this question.2quik4u wrote: Gordon

I think the ranking probably has to go beyond pure wins and titles, however Petty so clearly dominates those categories that he is undisputed in my opinion. One thing to consider...unless you have the big personalities and fan-drawing power of a Petty or an Earnhardt...you don't have a NASCAR that has the draw that it has attained currently.
1. Petty
2. Pearson
3. Earnhardt
4. Gordon
5. Allison
6. Jimmie Johnson
7. Yarborough -

Pearson has a higher percentage in wins, top 5, top10, and poles than anyone in the history of NASCAR.killdeer wrote:

He only raced in 4 complete seasons in his 27 year carreer and won 3 titles.
Richard Petty competed in for 35 years with 32 complete seasons and 7 titles. -
