  What part of that makes you unsure whether it was better or worse?

  I have to go with Dale. Petty is a close second. JJ someday could very well become #1. Four in a row is very impressive, and he's still relatively young.

  That doesn't necessarily mean the competition is better. I'm not arguing one way or the other, I'm not taking a stance so I don't really understand why you're pushing this?

  Gordon still needs 20 more races before he's raced in even HALF as many races as Petty. How are you going to reach a good assessment of the drivers based on that when one driver has twice as many races under his belt than the other? If you want to go by numbers...it's hands down Richard Petty. Nobody has come close to having the numbers he has.

  So since Petty run so many races this makes him #1? He may have run more than anyone ever has. To me this just proves he had money to back him.

  He ran his entire career against Petty. Never raced a complete season(came close like 3 times Years he won title) in 27 years. Can you imagine if he would have been able to run the entire season for that time period. IMO he would have taken a couple of those titles away from Petty.

  When you run in twice as many races..and are still able to maintain the same percentage numbers as the others being talked about..then I'd say yes..that is definitely something to take into consideration.

  By those numbers you would give the edge to Petty.
  But I would like to point out that Petty had the sponsorship and money that would give him better equipment.
  So is he really better?

  The sport has always been about sponsorship/money. If Petty was able to get better stuff..well..I guess we can't fault Petty for that.

  I think the ranking probably has to go beyond pure wins and titles, however Petty so clearly dominates those categories that he is undisputed in my opinion. One thing to consider...unless you have the big personalities and fan-drawing power of a Petty or an Earnhardt...you don't have a NASCAR that has the draw that it has attained currently.

  Pearson has a higher percentage in wins, top 5, top10, and poles than anyone in the history of NASCAR.
  He only raced in 4 complete seasons in his 27 year carreer and won 3 titles.
  Richard Petty competed in for 35 years with 32 complete seasons and 7 titles.
