The Detroit Tigers sign Verlander for 5 yr/80 million

  The Detroit Tigers are going to pay Justin Verlander $80 million for 5 years. If he wins 16 games per year, makes 40 starts per year, pitches 250 innings for the year, and throw 100 pitches per start, Verlander will receive:
  $1,000,000 per win.
  $400,000 per start.
  $64,000 per inning pitched
  $4,000 per pitch.

  well, they could be like Cleveland and trade him for a couple of AAAA players and a single A pitcher with a bad arm. Be thankful you have an owner who is willing to spend some of his money in order to have a competitive team. C.C. Sabathia could have been still pitching in Cleveland if Dolan would have had any balls and signed him to an extension before he won the Cy Young.

  Really? Why not? Verlander is easily one of the top 5 starters in the MLB. This is a great move.

  ^ Greinke, Carpenter, Johan, and other young guys like Josh Johnson and Jon Lester have all performed at the level of or above the level Verlander has ever reached.
  
  Verlander isn't a top 5 pitcher at all, let alone easily.

  Yea ok, Verlander led the majors with 269 SO's and tied for most wins with 19. I'd say he is top 5 as a starter and hasn't even hit his prime yet.

  He's definitely NOT top 5. Wins is one of the most overrated stats there is.
  
  He's definitely great at striking out hitters, but he is not a top 5 pitcher overall.

  You have your opinion, I have mine. Verlander is who I would want to build my team around. Guy is only 24-25 and has alot of room to get even better.
  
  And the whole point of this thread is that it was a good move for the Tigers. Whether you think Verlander is top 5 or not, he is a great pitcher and it was a good move for the Tigers.

  This contract is a steal when you consider what some other starters putting up roughly the same numbers have been comanding on the open market.
  
  It's for 2 less years, but they paid Verlander less than half (80 vs. 161 million) of what the Yankees paid CC when he was a free agent at about the same age as Verlander.
  
  I suspect over the next years Verlander and CC put up very similar numbers baring injury, but Verlander will cost $35million less over that period.
  
  John Lackey just got the same 5 year $80 million deal this off season, and I like Verlander alot more.
  
  Detroit did very very well in this deal and he will look underpaid most likely in 3-4 years given the way prices rapidly inflate for pitchers.

  Every team needs an ace if you want to compete, an apparent fact lost on Tribe ownership. The Tigers were very smart to be proactive in signing theirs. If they wait another year to 'determine market value' like the Tribe did with C.C., he might become unaffordable.
  So, the Tigers are going to build around Verlander....sounds like a much better plan than trying to catch lightning in a bottle year after year.

  Great deal for the Tigers to hang on to Verlander. One of the best young pitchers in the league who really learned how to Pitch and not just Throw last year. They will build around him and Cabrera for most of this decade and I couldn't ask for 2 better players to build around.

  Cole Hamels?? HAHA, guy was a .500 pitcher on a great team and had an ERA almost a full point higher than Verlander in the NL which is a much easier league to pitch it. Comparing NL pitchers to AL Pitchers is a mute point since the AL is much better hitting league with the DH. Verlander was 6th in the AL in ERA, 1st in strikeouts, 1st in Innings pitched, 1st in Wins, and 5th in WHIP. You are entitled to your opinion but imo, Verlander is a top 5 pitcher in the AL.

  WHen asked why he did it now when he coulda had alot bigger one if he stayed healty for two years and then did it at the end of his contract...he responded that it was neat to think about but why wait if you know you want to stay.
  
  Plus....why wait 2 yers to possibly get more when you get 80 mill right now!
