Miami Dolphins Offseason
-
j_crazyI'm not the only Dolfan on here, so I thought we could talk a little about this offseason. Got the 12th pick in the draft. Miami under parcells hasn't really made huge FA acquisitions, but there is always that possibility. My amature assessment ranks the team needs as follows:
1. OLB - Porter is descending the mountain. Taylor is a shell of his former self
2. WR - they lack a true #1
3. ILB - Crowder is always banged up, Ayodele is old. Time to get better in the middle.
4. SS - Bell is not fast enough to make a good zone defender, and not explosive enough to play man.
5. OL - The tackles are good (though I'd like to see Carey at OG since that is is natural position) but the OG's and C need to get some more depth.
6. CB - no depth on the roster now.
Here is how I'd love the Dolpins draft to go.
#12 - Rolando McClain, ILB - Alabama
#43 - Ricky Sapp, OLB - Clemson (also could take Taylor Mays(yuck) or Chad Jones (yay) here)
#74 - Sergio Kindle, OLB - Texas (also Darrell Stuckey or Navarro Bowman if he falls)
FA I'd like to see Targeted:
1. Ronnie Brown, RB (RFA) Can't let him go
2. Brandon Marshall, WR. I think the Tuna can make him happy and I think his attitude is insane, but I'd live with some of his crap to get him in the Uni.
3. Miles Austin, WR. If you don't go after Marshall, go after him.
4. Jhari Evans, OG. Perfect OG for this offense.
5. Shawne Merriman, OLB. I think his price tag is too high, but I'd still talk to him.
6. Barrett Ruud/Demeco Ryans, ILB. I don't think either one leaves their current team, but if they do, the Dolphins shoule have them on the short list. -
pkebkerI doubt McClain would be available at 12, and Kindle will be way gone by 74.
-
sleeperThat's a lot of LB's.
-
Laley23I was hoping McClain is available at 7 for the Browns, but I doubt that even happens. I think you need to re-asses the first round pick as McClain is highly unlikely to be available at 12.
-
h2thaizzoI think McClain will be around at 7. I can't see KC passing up on a LT, which is their #1 position of need right now. They are the only team picking top 6 that really is in dire need of an ILB.
Miami needs a lot of things. They need a #1 WR, as mentioned by j_crazy. They could use some help on the offensive line, the defense definitely has holes that need addressed. I think DE is the only position that doesn't need a lot of help. NT could be a position to upgrade, and there are some solid candidates this year to address that issue.
#12-Dez Bryant. I think he is available here, and McClain won't be. He would be selected around the pick that most draft scouts feel he is ranked at, so its not a reach, and he definitely plays a position of need. You can get Marshall, but its gonna take your first and third to do so. If Denver would accept your 2011 first, then I'd go after him, but I doubt they would do that. Austin won't leave Dallas, in my estimation. The one guy floating under the radar that will be a RFA after the year is Steve Breaston. Unless they are willing to offer him a BIG pay day, his tender likely won't net a first and third as Marshall's would. I can't predict offseason moves right now, so lets say Dez Bryant is the pick.
#43-Eric Norwood. He really could play either ILB or OLB, but is just as good against the run as he is as a pass rusher.
#74 Morgan Burnett. -
j_crazyParcells has only taken 1 WR with a first round pick. He's taken 6 LB's.
-
h2thaizzoThat may be, but lets for shits and giggles say McClain isn't available when you pick, is Bill going to draft Kindle when he is rated a late 1st, early 2nd round prospect by most, Jerry Hughes, who is ranked right there with Kindle? Those are the only 3 LB's I can really see going in the first round, Spikes, maybe, but anyone else no. SO do you wish to spend your draft pick to reach for a guy that could be had in the second, or do you draft the wideout that your team needs, thats rated right where you select him? I don't see McClain being there when you guys pick.
-
j_crazyI'm not against picking a WR, but I don't think that they will. I've seen/heard that McClain is a middle 1st Projection. That's why I had him 12. Sapp is a 1-2 depending on who's talking, and Kindle I've seen as low as mid 3rd. I'm not making up my dream scenario. just how I'd like it to play out based on what draft board rankings I've seen. I'd love for the Dolphins to go ILB round 1, FS 2, OLB 3. That way we add talent (hopefully) at depleted positions and go after a WR in FA (Austin is a Parcells find if I'm not mistaken). I'm saying I'd rather have a known commodity that is a head case (Marshall) than an unkown who's already having authority issues to the point of being inactive the last half of his JR. Season (Bryant).
-
h2thaizzoWell unless the a new CBA is signed, then Austin and practically every other young free agent you will have to pay to get. Dallas is going to offer him enough money where it would cost you a first and maybe more to snag him away. I don't think Marshall's that big of a head case, but again, you want to go ILB first round, and if you get Marshall you're 99% going to have to trade your #12 pick to make it happen, thus meaning you don't get your ILB either way. McClain is a mid first projection, BUT, this draft class is so weak at ILB that him going much earlier than that is very possible. There are several safeties that could become solid NFL guys, and I'd say the same for the corners. With ILB, its McClain, Spikes, who some say will only be a 4-3 MLB at the next level, Washington from TCU, Joe Pawelek from Baylor, Pat Angerer, another 4-3 probability, Micah Johnson, who could be as good as Spikes if he didn't get injured every other week. Really, there are maybe 2-3 guys who likely will project as top 3 round prospects when all's said and done. A couple late round guys to keep your eyes on are Philip Dillard of Nebraska, and Kion Wilson, of South Florida. Dillard I saw make a ton of plays on that defense. He can blitz, he is pretty solid in coverage, and solid tackler. Wilson I see more like a D'Qwell Jackson or Andra Davis type MLB, in otherwords, a good compliment player to put next to a playmaker ILB.

h2thaizzoI never said they COULDN'T. Notice how that mock draft also shows Denver picking him unless they trade Marshall prior to their selection?

j_crazyNolan is the new DC.
Also, Kiper has the dolphins taking McClain at 12. Booom. -
Gblocki think they need to get a qb
-
jordo212000Nolan was a great hire for Miami. On the other hand, what on earth is Josh McDaniels doing out there. He started out so well, but now he really seems like that great start has made him think he is a god or something. First you have to know Brandon Marshall is a head case and he had him acting like a model citizen for so long, and then in week 17 they get into a petty argument and he benches him the game to decide their playoff fortunes, and THEN he doesn't ask back his DC who transformed an awful Denver defense into a solid group?
-
j_crazyEven with signing Dansby last week. I want the Dolphins to draft McClain or Kindle if Bryant or Berry is gone.
Miami has Wake, Dansby, Crowder, need a 4th LB for this rotation.
the good thing (the best thing IMO) about Dansby is that he can play inside or out. so If the dolphins get bryant or berry at 11 and weatherspoon at 43, he can play outside. or if they get kindle at 11 and go with a WR or S at 43, dansby is the inside guy.
puzzled by the ferguson resigning since at most you're getting 8 games out of him. -
j_crazySafety:
Miami has attended a private workout with Morgan Burnett, S, Ga Tech.
They have also scheduled workouts with Earl Thomas, S, Texas and Rashed Jones, S, Georgia.
WR:
Miami has attended a private workout with Mike Williams, WR, Syracuse.
They have scheduled workouts with Scott Long, WR, Louisville and Brandon Lafell, WR, LSU.
OL:
Miami had Mike Iupati, G, Idaho at team headquarters for a meeting.
This surprises me as they have Nate Garner, Donald Thomas and Richie Incognito on the roster.
They are looking to upgrade/add depth with another FA LB signing, but no luck so far. -
stroups
There is no way I would ever think about drafting this guy until at least the 5th round. He is the poster child of a head case; put him in South Beach and he would go crazy.j_crazy wrote: Safety:

j_crazyafter some further reading I agree. quit because of an impending suspension???
this guy sounds like he's cookoo for coco puffs.
side note:
Miami is asking for a 3rd for smiley but insiders are saying they realistically are looking for a late 3 or early 4. -
j_crazyMy new dream Draft scenario:
take Bryant at 12 if he's there. If not trade down to the late 20's and take Nate Allen or Earl Thomas. Stockpile 2nd and 3rd rounders because this draft is loaded in the middle rounds. -
justincredibleWord on the street is that the Dolphins are/were very interested in Leon Washington.
-
j_crazythat works for me.
-
j_crazyOkay, I'll break down the Draft:
28 - Odrick. I don't like the pick as much as I like getting out of 12th and getting back into the 2nd. Odrick will be a great 5 technique, but once Ferguson comes back (and Starks moves back to the 5) his PT will be cut and using a 1st on a 2 down player is dumb.
40 - Misi. Going to switch to OLB and play the position left by Taylor. I like this pick, but think it was a bit of a reach.
73 - Jerry. I'd have like to see them go with a DB here. There was still some very talented players to be had in the back end. This is the 5th OG on the roster (6th if you count Grove who plays C and G). Very questionable pick, especially when you consider this guy has Terrance Cody/Bitchtits syndrome and could potentially eat himself out of the league or to death.
119 - Edds. Reach. That's it. Better players available at this pick.
145 - Carroll. My favorite pick in this draft. If he's healthy (all indications is the leg is going to be 100%) this is a great pick.
163 - Jones. Good pick. Should compete for the FS spot right away (will probably move to SS when Bell is done)
212 - McCoy. Great talent. Could be good value but I've heard he failed a drug test. Could be a knucklehead and flame out.
252 - Spitler. Good pick, value-wise. Good depth added with him. Could have gone a lot of other places here to add depth at more pressing positions, but this late you gotta go for value.
I like this draft. Edds and Jerry should have been other picks and I think we reached for Misi. Not a total wash, but it's not like the 1st 2 drafts the Tuna had.
