About the pass happy comment.......typically over the years if there is a recipe in beating the Steelers it has been through the air mostly with short quick passes to negate the rush. They did not show the game here and the web sucks to stream radio so i had to follow on game cast so I'm not sure if that is what they were trying to do. Sounded like Kiser was holding onto the ball too long which is typical of rookies. Impressed with the browns defense though.BR1986FB;1871038 wrote:Was losing my mind on that play. Announcers are thinking "outstanding catch" while I'm thinking "turn the fuck around and it's an INT."
As far as the game goes:
Kizer gets a "C" from me. Showed some flashes and real nice throws but also missed some wide open looks. Didn't read through this thread but Joe Haden was blessed that he was facing a rookie QB in his Steeler debut because, just like in C-Town, he let three receivers get behind him, for what should've been long gains, and Kizer missed. The holding onto the ball is MADDENING. He took 7 sacks, 6 of which should've been balls he threw away. We're going to hear the media slurp all over the Watt kid's knob all week when, if he faces a decisive QB, with a quick release, he gets nothing.
The defense looked very solid, especially against the run, but NO pass rush. Was a little disappointed in Gregg Williams not trying to dial up more blitzes. This unit had too many "near misses" (the Schobert tip, which was excellent concentration for Brown to haul in that tipped ball, and that dumbass pass that they didn't defend at the end of the game that should've been an INT).
As I believe like_that & COA may have mentioned, Hue was being "pass happy" again. Have to get Crowell going.
Oh, and special teams? GFY. Giving up a blocked punt to set the tone for the game.
Overall, pissed that they couldn't pull this off because they took a supposed "Super Bowl contender" down to the wire, but not a shitty effort as we've seen before. As was mentioned, not a fan of moral victories.
And the rum game for pitt.....bell...that is what happens when you sit out camp. You can no expdct to come back and be ready to play. His greediness almost cost them a win and likely will do so in coming weeks until up to speed.
I expect Cleveland to be much better and by the sounds of it finish ahead of cinch cincy for sure -
BR1986FBYeah, screw moral victories after Fat Boy's post game press conference comments, trolling the fan base.

like_thatSince we are on the topic of moral victories, it seems like a lot of the veteran players (not many of them on this team I know) and coach Jackson were impressed with how Kizer handled that game. Zeitler was really impressed that Kizer took a shot from Shazier and got right back up. They all believe he showed maturity and composure. I was texting my friend during the game, and said one thing I like about Kizer is he doesn't get rattled under pressure. He still steps up to try and make a throw. Hopefully he can learn to get rid of the ball more quickly. Hue said after the game he thinks Kizer can be great. I hope he gets better every game.

If he makes it through the season, and plays a full 16 games, I bet that come draft time they won't be using a high pick on a QB. The reason I say this is that I expect improvement from week to week and if he starts all 16 games, they should have enough to go on. So far, he's promising but has to learn to throw the ball away and have better pocket awareness. He definitely can make all of the throws, which we haven't been able to say about a QB in a long time.like_that;1871099 wrote:Since we are on the topic of moral victories, it seems like a lot of the veteran players (not many of them on this team I know) and coach Jackson were impressed with how Kizer handled that game. During the press conference he seemed to understand he needs to work on that. Kizer seems pretty mature. I didn't follow him much at ND, but I don't recall this type of maturity coming out of him. Maybe crimson can speak to that.BR1986FB;1871106 wrote:If he makes it through the season, and plays a full 16 games, I bet that come draft time they won't be using a high pick on a QB. The impression I got is that he could have a confidence issue that he'd need to overcome but that was due to Brian Kelly. I don't follow ND football either so don't know that it's accurate.like_that;1871111 wrote:During the press conference he seemed to understand he needs to work on that. Kizer seems pretty mature. CB JOE HADEN, 51.4 OVERALL GRADE[/h]Haden’s first game in a new uniform coincidentally came against his former team. While he broke up a pass early on, the rest of his outing was average at best. He didn’t give up any major plays, but did allow six catches for 80 yards and a 106.3 passer rating into his coverage. -

Haden is fortunate that Kizer isn't the most accurate QB. There were three different occasions where a receiver got behind him and Kizer missed. Duke Johnson was wide open for a probable TD when Kizer missed. When Pittsburgh faces a QB with a little more accuracy, they are going to regret signing him, even if it's only one year guaranteed.like_that;1871119 wrote:https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-refocused-pittsburgh-steelers-21-cleveland-browns-18

kizer permanenteI watched Kizer a ton in college. He was always composed. Even when thrown in as a freshman. Holding on to the ball has always been an issue and accuracy was always an issue. He typically makes the right read, and never rushes/gets flustered. Arm is obviously his biggest strength. But the biggest thing Kizer fails at is accuracy. He struggles putting the deep ball where it needs to be and he usually makes a receiver reach for it which almost always affects yards after catches. So in essence.., he'll get it to the right guy and the throw is on time.. but thats all the yardage you're getting. Hopefully he can be coached up on these 2 things as thats what separates a serviceable NFL QB and a great one.
-
kizer permanenteand FWIW I think Kizer can improve. He didn't improve at Notre Dame b/c he played for an ignorant narcissist that doesn't know what he's doing. I mean, he thought a QB that can't start at Florida was better than a guy starting now in the NFL. And despite all the temper tantrums he faced from said narcissist, he never lost his composure. That says a lot about his maturity. The best thing Kizer did was get away from that toxic situation.

He gave a couple opportunities deep but Kizor didn't make him pay. Haden at this point in his career looks about like every Steelers CB since Rod Woodson. I'll take him over William Gay.like_that;1871119 wrote:[h=3]https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-refocused-pittsburgh-steelers-21-cleveland-browns-18

Kizer has always been a very mature kid. His parents are absolutely great people and really raised him right and always held him accountable. At ND he never shied away from the moment. He would take a hit and get back up and not be rattled at all, so what we saw yesterday really didn't surprise me. Brian Kelly is a complete idiot and that had a lot to do with ND last year and Kizer. For whatever reason he thought Zaire was a better qb. Even though Kizer was way superior.like_that;1871111 wrote:During the press conference he seemed to understand he needs to work on that. Kizer seems pretty mature. Laley23I've followed him since HS. Even when the camera isn't on him, he is a great person. He would always take pictures and sign autographs for the little brothers and sisters of opponents players throughout the state. When he won the state title as a Junior, it REALLY blew up, and then he committed to ND. Interviews were always coming in for him, and he never blew anyone off and gave the same answer if the same question kept being asked (as he moved down the line for interviews).
On thing I always loved about him is he never forgot his teammates where as important as he was to CCHS and ND. I produced a few segments with him at my old job and he would always come up after or before and tell us about so-so should get an interview...this would be a great story on this kid etc. Never wanted to be he only guy getting attention and always wanted the backups or 3rd stringers to have their day in TV. -

I agree with all of this. My little brother used to work out with him in the summer catching passes for him. I was invited but was always too busy. Plus I have family that is basically a legend at Toledo cc. And everyone that has ever been around him has said what such a humble and great kid he is.Laley23;1871186 wrote:I've followed him since HS. Even when the camera isn't on him, he is a great person. In all seriousness, glad to hear he's a good guy. Easier to root for, and love the local connection. -

I'm willing to take on any bets that the fat bastard balloons up to about 350 once he retires. You know he has to have major self restraint in the offseason. Dude probably walks past the dessert section at buffets and gets cheesecake wood. Major fat potential. He's already big.like_that;1871335 wrote:FIFY
