Sources saying Mangini and Staff to stay

  • rugbywrestler
Lol wasnt there just a thread about how he was going to get fired?
  • wes_mantooth
I think it is a good decision. The team played hard for him and things seem to get better after Braylon was traded.

    Good.

Yep, per Twitter, Holmgren said that Mangini and his staff is here to stay, and then said "Let's get to work".

    Say goodbye to Tom Heckert.

I guess Mangini and Staff includes Daboll doesn't it ?:(
  • devil1197
Why goodbye to Heckert? He may or may not like Mangini it was never stated.

But we have a new main guy in Cleveland and his name is Holmgren. If Heckert likes Holmgren then its a good possibility he will join.

Face it, a guy wouldn't interview for the same job twice if he knew there was a good chance Mangini was going to stay on as the coach. Also, why leave the Eagles to interview for the Browns twice??

Doesn't mean Mangini couldn't make changes to the staff.

Why wouldn't he at least want to give Holmgren an interview.

I think Heckert goes with the Seahawks, and it just won't work with the GM having control of the 53 man roster (which has to happen if we take Heckert on a lateral move from Philly). That was one of the big problems with Kokonis, we had to give him say in the 53 man roster, and he and Mangini (who were good friends) clashed, big time. Imagine how Heckert will do with Mangini.

I'm not completely ruling Heckert out, I'm just saying it's highly unlikely.

Daboll needs to go... although it was his first time calling plays, but there was 0 sign of a stratagy for most of the year until we decided to line up and run it down everyones throat. Can his offense even be called a west coast offense?

I think if Heckert was going to be hired, they would have waited to announce Mangini's return so that he could have pretended that he was involved in the decision.

I think were it not for the fact there is a good possibility we might not see a 2011 season, Mangini would have been gone and Homgren would have cleaned house.

There is too much unknown out there concerning how the CBA ends up when the eventually reach a deal, so it probably is best for continuity sake to keep Mangini for next year and unless there is drastic improvement you fire him, get someone like Gruden (or Holmgren himself as I think he wants to leave that option open) and then go from there starting fresh.

I agree that the CBA debacle has a bit to do with it.

I also think that it's a financial decision as well, partially. Not that Lerner doesn't have the cash, but it's too expensive to hire a staff, then fire then, buy out their contracts, and then hire a new staff, every year or two years. Not to mention, Holmgren has a soft spot for first year coaches. He thinks it'd be unfair.

I think he probably had an "interview" of some sort with Mangini and walked out impressed.

Either way, as a Browns fan, I'm going to support whatever Holmgren does, for the most part.

Then you have to wait until Philly loses to announce that. What if the Eagles make the SB, are you going to wait almost a month to announce whether or not your keeping Mangini.

Or give him the title of Vice President of Football Operations...then not a lateral move and still won't have final say on roster...

This makes me laugh now at all the reports that said Mangini's firing was a sure thing...IE: John Clayton, Chris Mortensen, Adam Schefter, The entire ProFootballTalk website, and many from the Cleveland media....

Very good point. If they fired Mangini and there is no 2011 season, they would be paying two coaches for doing nothing. My prediction is that Mangini will be fired in the second half of next season and Holmgren will finish the year.
  • DaBrowns41
I also think another reason Mangini was kept is because Gruden, Fox, and a couple other good options will be out there in 2011.

It's a win/win. If he keeps Mangini, and Mangini does well, or at least shows progression, great. If not, he gets the coach he wants, and feels good knowing he at least gave Mangini an opportunity.

What if we continue to see progress next season and we improve our record? Still fire Mangini?

Best thing I think for the franchise. This draft will give us an infusion of guys that can contribute right away. Will they win big, no, but I'm really looking forward to see who Holmgren brings in to be his draft guru.

Absolutely you keep him. I just dont see your record improving.

I had said earlier that I only wanted Mangini to return if Holmgren felt they could work together and not just because of ripping off 4 straight wins to end the season. After hearing the interviews the last couple days that seems to be the case here, at least for the time being. Hopefully there is enough improvement that Mangini can keep his job for many more years.

Loving Holmgren already. Great decision on not breaking up this chemistry.
