  Even though Votto was gunned down on a fine charge and throw from CF on wet grounds on Schebler's to end the inning, Reds score two in the 2nd to doubly off-set the Arroyo HR off Arroyo, and Reds lead 5-1. Arroyo pitches a zero in the top of the 3rd.

  Reds get one in the 3rd for a 6-1 lead, but the trend is down. If they get zeroes in the next 6 innings they'll be in trouble!

  Votto's baserunning in the bottom of the fourth got him exactly what he was envisioning, runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out! However, with proper baserunning, it would have been bases loaded and no out. Votto's base running strategy is pretty close to his hitting strategy, advance one base and turn it over to the next hitter! Remember he was burnt by trying to take two bases last AB and got thrown out at home.

  I think the most at fault on that baserunning play is Duvall, who didn't see that Votto was tagging and therefore wouldn't be able to score with the ball bouncing off the wall directly back to the outfielder, and was almost to 3rd, before re-treating to 2nd, instead of just staying near 2nd. Suarez was just taking his cue from Duvall.

  Schebler lost that foul fly out about 2 secs before the ball hit the ground when it came out of the glove and touched the wall, even though he valiantly tried to corral it on two or three more bobbles!

  Disagree because Votto has to be able to read the ball better. Duvall read it and got to within 10 feet of Votto who had a 90 ft head start. Pence never even put his glove up to attempt to decoy the runners. He has to score on that, he broke back toward base not only too early in the play, but way too far also.

  Arroyo would have gotten his six innings completed if Cozart and Schebler would have made those two plays in the 6th that realistically very well could have been made.

  Nevertheless, Duvall has to read it off of Votto's read rather than his own, even if his own read may be more correct, otherwise what happened happens. Votto is playing to make the most sure he gets a run, which I can't fault very much. Now if it was that situation in the 8th when the Reds were down 2 or 3 runs, then I'd have more of a quarrel over how Votto read it, but even then if he read it the same way, I feel like Duvall would be most at fault, and of course then it would be more of a hot topic if what happened would have been down 3 in the 8th!

  This week I saw a high school kid on 3rd with 1 out read a mash like that and take off running, then when the OF made a great catch he was out of position and couldn't get back to tag and score the tying run like he should have. Game situation must be primely at the top of a good baserunners mind, and they must be keenly aware of what the runners in front of them choose to do, and react off of that, not their own read. The object of the game is to win, not to beat them by 15 runs.

  Totally different situation....runner on 3rd less than 2 you play it extra careful and jog in easily. At no point can you ever do that on second. Joey Votto has horrible base running instincts.

  I agree Joey is terrible on base running, My point is the one most at fault for the 2 runners on 2nd was Duvall. When the ball is flying to the outfield, the trail runners cannot watch it all the way, they need to peek at the lead base runners to judge what to do. I have seen so many big innings run out of due to inattention to lead base runners! One of the most painful ways to lose a game!

  Reds have a nice two run first, but then a sub, similar to Alcantara on a Sunday a few weeks ago, makes a terrible error on a routine fly and then is not able to make another play to put the Reds into the soup. But the Reds get out of it with a 2-2 tie on a base running blunder similar to the Reds last night not co-ordinating with the lead runner.
