Scott Boras is the Man!
-
IggyPride00I detest Boras and he is everything that is wrong with sports, but how he managed to get Matt Holliday a 7 year $120 million dollar deal that could potentially become worth $140 million over 8 years (if he hits the incentives to trigger the final year) when there were no other viable bidders is amazing.
The Mets signed Bay(for half the money), the Red Sox had spent their money on Lackey, the Yankees made it clear they weren't playing for him, the Angels and Dodgers were boycotting Boras clients.....there was no where to go. At this point everyone knows that the Boras's mystery team was a big hoax based on his past negotiations, yet some how he got the Cardinals to add 2-3 more years and another $40-60 million from the 5 year $80 million deal originally being talked about knowing they were bidding against themselves and there was no where to go that would pay him any more than half of the $120 million he got.
He is a good player, but outside of the hot 2 months he had after the trade was a bum in the American League and spent his career accumulating stats in Coors. To give 7 years, a full no trade for the duration of the contract, and $120 million to a 30 year old just screams of a deal that will be an albatross around the neck of the franchise 4-5 years from now. I think the name Vernon Wells rings a bell.
He has led a few clients off a cliff (Johnny Damon) but he always seems to get 7-8 year deals at monster dollars for his guys against all market trends even when owners know they are getting fleeced and will ultimately regret doing the deal. It is truly astonishing to me that that he always pulls a rabbit out of his hat like that. -

MulvaI'm not sure who Adrian Beltre's agent is, but that guy deserves a pat on the back as well.
$10 million next year for a guy who went .265 with 8 homers and 44 RBI? -

That would be a Boras client as well.I'm not sure who Adrian Beltre's agent is, but that guy deserves a pat on the back as well. -

darbypitcher22Boras is a crook.
he's who you sign with when you know you're not as good as the money you'll be getting paid is -
thedynasty1998Not sure how anyone can dislike Boras just because he's better than anyone else out there. He does his job better than anyone else, and I don't know why every player wouldn't sign on with him.

NateHe is the man. Jerk? Maybe.

Elliot StablerThey just cost themselves Pujols when he is a FA
-
daveyou really think they made this move without knowing they can resign pujols?
-
Elliot StablerPujols is going to get $30 million/year
After this deal...there is no way that they can afford him -
IggyPride00
They will resign him, but he is going to cost around $25 million a year which is reasonable considering he is the best player in the game.you really think they made this move without knowing they can resign pujols?
The Cardinals ownership seems married to a $100 million payroll because of their debt obligations for their part of the cost of building the ballpark a few years back. Assuming that is true, they will have over 40% of their budget tied up in 2 players with Carpenter and Wainright coming up on free agency in the not too distant future.
The long and short of it seems to be they will be major contenders the next 2 years, and after that they will basically be relegated to the Mark Shaprio bargain basement isle to fill out the roster every year as they have so much tied up in Pujols and Holliday.
They would have been better with 3 guys making $6 million a year than Holliday making $18 and 2 journeymen making the league minimum.
The Tribe will look like the Yankees compared to the payroll flexibility the Cardinals will have. -
King CurtisAbout a year ago, some folks were hinting that Pujols could get a 5 year $150 million dollar deal.
-
NatePujols can probably get as much money as he wants if he leaves StL. i know Albert likes it there so I'm sure he will bargain with them to stay for a "fair" amount of money. I'm guessing 5 years $140-$160 million.

I cannot figure out how owners can be so stupid....he gets them throwing money at the wind. $100 million for Holliday is ludicrous.IggyPride00 wrote: I detest Boras and he is everything that is wrong with sports, but how he managed to get Matt Holliday a 7 year $120 million dollar deal that could potentially become worth $140 million over 8 years (if he hits the incentives to trigger the final year) when there were no other viable bidders is amazing.
The Cards are going to hate themselves in the morning. For all the crap I give the Yankee$ for buying players, I've not known them to be completely clueless. It's one thing to pay a little extra to a guy who will put people in the seats. C.C. ....A-Rod...Jeter...Texiera
Holliday...eh not so much (sarcasm) -
saltoI'm a Cardinals fan, and love this deal. Who of the available FA's was going to protect Pujols in the line-up? Holliday was the only hitter capable of keeping the opposing team from intentionally walking AP. As for the money, the Cardinals had been responsible for Kennedy(with the A's all of 2009) and Glaus(only appeared in 14 in games for the Card's, mostly as a pinch hitter) paycheck. Also, they consistently sell out their home games. Pujols will get a lifetime deal(if he wants one) and has said that he will demand a trade only if the front office doesn't show a desire to field a winner. They made this deal, in part to keep AP.

Bingo, we have a winner. They had to sign Holliday or else Pujols was leaving. They have the money, they've just always made the decision to stay around 100 million payroll...not anymore. They've made a decision to compete for years to come, and mad a committment financially to do that. Pujols' resigning is now a lock, and the team is now an even MORE desirable place to land as a free agent.salto wrote: They made this deal, in part to keep AP. -

How many players go to terrible teams offensively and play well?IggyPride00 wrote: I detest Boras and he is everything that is wrong with sports, but how he managed to get Matt Holliday a 7 year $120 million dollar deal that could potentially become worth $140 million over 8 years (if he hits the incentives to trigger the final year) when there were no other viable bidders is amazing.

He was a bum because 1) he got out of Coors, and 2) because he was the only halfway decent hitter for the A's.
Look at what happened when he got a lineup surrounded by hitters. He can't get RBI opportunities if nobody gets on. He was still hitting for a solid average, and good OPS, his first month was the only real disappointment, and every player in the MLB (for the most part) has at least one month in which they seem to struggle a bit. -
saltoLatest talk has the Cardinals looking at Tejada for 3rd base. I wanted them to get him last year, but they took Derosa instead. I wasn't disappointed, but I definitely would like MT at 3rd.

charliehustle14Isn't Boras also a pharmacist? Someone had told me that a long time ago.
