So you have a 10 year old son or daughter.....

  • BR1986FB
You're a diehard fan from the city you live(d) in (Browns myself) and that kid says "daddy I want you to buy me a Packers/49ers (etc, etc) jersey and become a fan" do you do it or care?

This was a topic this morning on 92.3 and the one guy had me rolling. Browns fan relocated to Atlanta and had an 8 and a 10 year old boy. One kid wanted to be a Jets fan and the dad said "not if you want to eat, drink and have a roof over your head." Pretty much forced his kid to be a Browns fan. SMDH

Personally, I understand that younger kids tend to be bandwagon/jersey chasers so I wouldn't necessarily have an issue as long as the kid didn't want to root for the Inbreds (Steelers) or the Ratturds (Ravens). Wouldn't have much issue with them rooting for other teams (even the Bengals). Wouldn't be thrilled about it but I understand the nature of the beast.

    What say you?

I got to choose what team I felt entertained by and followed so I would support my child having the same choice.

For pro, it would irk me, but I would get over it. Kids do what they want, the majority aren't going to give a shit what their parents think about their chosen sports team(s).

College is a different. If I ever have kids they will damn well be OSU fans. I'll take them to games at early ages and ingrain them with everything OSU.

Really interesting one kid wants to be a Jets fan. I could see them wanting to be Falcons fans since that is where they live and the games they would most likely be able to attend.

I don't have kids yet but I will let them choose whatever teams they want to. I'm sure I will question and ask them why they want to be fans of that team but with as big into sports as I am I'd like to think my kid(s) will just root for the same teams I do.

I'll just be happy if my daughter likes sports.

My kid will be a Cleveland/OSU fan. No debate. There is no way I will abide my kid being a Raven/steeler fan in my house. We don't become fans of thieves or rapists, but hey to each their own.

Also, BR why do you always start threads that end with "...."?

    No clue......

But in this case, it wasn't like I was going to finish my topic in the first sentence line so I left it ongoing "......"

My kids will be Buckeyes but I will not make them Browns fans.

My wife is a Ravens fan and I'm a Browns fan. I won't force my kids to be fans of the Browns, but I'll sure as hell buy them a bunch of Browns merch. Ultimately, they'll decide. I just hope that they don't go for the Ratbirds. That would hurt too much haha.

On the bright side, my wife has adopted OSU as her favorite college football team. So we'll still be an OSU household.

My son wanted to be a Steelers fan. I told him no way in hell as long as I'm supporting his ass. Told him he could be a fan of any other team he wanted, except Steelers or Ravens.

I've been buying as much Browns merchandise for the oldest grandkid (2 years old) as possible but his dad is one of the local Steelers/Tribe/Cavs/OSU frontrunners so I doubt I win that battle. The other grandkid's dad has a stranglehold on his fandom so that kid will be a Yinzer fan. At least I can get under that dad's skin by saying, 'aww, look at that chubby little ginger" about his kid. Drives him nuts. It's the little things....

I'll let them choose between Cleveland/UK and the closest local team. But they will obviously be decked out in gear before they are old enough to make that decision for themselves.

Yikes! Lucky for me, my wife and I hate the Steelers with the same passion. I even asked her would she buy a Steelers jersey if our son ended up being a Steelers quarterback. Her response? "I wouldn't ever wear shittsburgh jersey!" Not even if your own son played for them? "Nope."

It was never a question with my kid. I raised him well. Although he does own one piece of Seahawks gear.

Years back my Bengals fan sister bought my son a Carson Palmer jersey as she thought would be funny. I didn't really care. He wore it a few times.

As an elementary kid back in the early/mid 80's I remember having a Falcons duffle bag, Broncos jersey, Giants jersey, Seahawks....along with my Steelers stuff.

Just liked how they looked. Not a lot of things are real important to a 10 year old.

    I was somewhat "forced."

Baseball was my first love and I had Pirates everything. I also was a big into Bo Jackson and my uncle is a diehard Raiders fan. I guess he asked me what I wanted for my bday and I was said "a Bo Jackson jersey!!" My grandfather was there and wasn't having it. He explained that if I liked the Pirates then it was only acceptable to like the Steelers. I never got that Bo jersey and they dressed me up as Bubby Brister for Halloween.

I also remember having a Bulls Starter pullover in elementary school. Who didn't love MJ? Fuck, I felt like THE MAN with that thing on.

My parents didn't force anything on me but sometimes I wish they had prevented me from being a Bengals/Reds fan.

I'm a homer, and there is no way I'd let my kids grow up to be anything but Cleveland /OSU fans. We are a big sports family, and there are some things that just are not negotiable.

Definitely had the Bulls starter jacket

With my son I just always bought him jerseys of different basketball and football players and a big variety of teams. I haven't forced any team on him and he just kinda likes them all it seems. Bengals and Cavs fans annoy him so he doesn't care if those teams win or not.

In high school there was a big section of Florida St football fans and Michigan stuff (football and basketball) was quite prominent....most of those people are now just Ohio St fans.

Gramps "gets" it. The only time I take issue with the NE Ohio frontrunners is when they root for all Cleveland teams yet their "team" is the Steelers. It's like one of those "who doesn't fit in this picture" type of things.

Hell, if I'm in the store and they have the Browns gear next to the Steelers gear and the Steelers gear is even touching the Browns gear I'll move the Browns gear so it's not infected. ;)

Pretty much sums it up for me.

My 8 year old son is all about sports and it drives my wife nuts that there are 2 of us like that in the house now. Growing up in OH, most of my family was Steelers fans (lived closer to Pittsburgh than Cleveland). I was a big Tony Dorsett fan (had a family friend that played with him at Pitt U), so I routed for the Cowboys. As I got older and lived in Canton/Akron area, I totally rooted for all the Cleveland teams and continue to this day. Now I moved to Charlotte 4 years ago and my son has taken a big liking to the Panthers and Hornets. At that age, I think it is fine to be somewhat of a bandwagon fan and root for different teams. That is my son's thing that any time we go on vacation or travel to places he wants shirts of sports teams. As they get older that is when they hone in more on their real teams. Let them be kids! Let him decide later in life if he really wants the torture we have as Browns fans.

My daughter will be a fan of whomever she wants. She'll end up an OSU fan bc her mom and both grandmother's will force that on her.

I hope she roots for the Mariners like I do, but who knows if she even will be into sports. She's only 9 months.

My parents weren't huge fans of any particular team. My mom is a OSU fan, but dad wasn't so I sided with dad. Oldest sister rooted for Notre Dame do I jumped on that. I became a Mariners fan in '95 probably. They had success and cool players in that decade(griffey, buhner, Edgar, Randy, a-rod). Also, jumped on the Cowboys bandwagon. I was like 7 so who cares? I've stuck with them though.

Mariners are the only one I follow in depth. Football, I just enjoy the sport and don't need to root for a team.
