Reds just cannot get the fundamentals right. Can't bunt runners over of move them from 2nd to 3rd with no out with a grounder to the right side(although Votto did that today). When you do get the runner to 3rd with one out, Bruce strikes out on 3 pitches out of the strike zone. Try to go in standing on a force play and the throw beats you because you didn't slide(Pirates got burned on that yesterday on Puig's gun from the OF for a force at 2nd).
But the end of the game today is another indicator of not knowing the fundamentals. Bases loaded, tie game, extra innings, home half, one out, infield and outfield in. Ball hit way out in the outfield and outfielders trot in. But someone astute notices the the runner on 2nd and 1st go to celebrate before they touch 3rd and 2nd, leaving two force outs on the table that would end the inning with no run scoring. They go to retrieve the ball to get the force outs, but it does not click in that you must get the out at 3rd before the one at 2nd, because the one at 2nd takes away the opportunity for the one of 3rd. Once they stepped on 2nd first the great story was blown. Very similar to a sharp pitcher letting a sacrifice bunt fall then whips it to first for the tag of the runner first, then step on the bag for the force of the bunter for a DP. I'll bet there are several very mentally sharp pitchers who have been very upset when they whip the throw over that the 1st or 2nd baseman catch the ball with their foot on the base negating their astute play.
If you notice Brandon Phiilips, who may have been the astute one on the field today to recognize the opportunity, whenever he covers 2nd on a bunt, he usually catches the ball with his feet off of 1B then consciously and deliberately steps on the bag to record the out on the bunter. BP is always looking to get an extra out by taking advantage of tricky situations.
