    I was being facetious.

Maybe not more, but it will still be a huge money-grabbing joke.

To those of us that follow the sport. Especially UFC 187. They do nothing to draw in a casual fan. Very few UFC fights/fighters do that, and not lately. Lesnar did it. GSP did it. Jones could possibly do it. Ortiz, Liddell, Rampage as well.

    That's what I meant.

and while MMA is more popular than boxing there just is something....different and special, that bring people to the table for a big time boxing event. The history, the rarity of a big event (UFCs are common) and the mystique of a big time boxing match does trump MMA.....even if MMA is a more popular event.
Doesnt quite make sense.....but it is just how it goes.

If there is a rematch it will be pumped up that Pac is now healthy and it will be a real fight, blah blah blah. I doubt you see the price lowered.

and because of "glitches" it will be pushed back later and later in the evening to get even more buys at the time.
Boxing has a tremendous deep and rich history and has been ingrained in human culture for over 100 years now, MMA is a newborn is comparison. They are completely different models, MMA will be lucky to ever garner the type of casual interest that boxing did for this past fight. I disagree that it's special, it USED to be special, promoters killed it. It's not about the best fighting the best anymore, it's about guys being protected throughout their entire careers and making it to those big pay days. It's all a business.

I could care less about the casual fan, as a consumer I want to get my money's worth and the UFC delivers that consistently where as boxing doesn't. The UFC has more PPV draws than boxing does, just none at the level of Floyd or Manny.

    Agree 100%.
The history around it, sorta like the Kentucky Derby, makes it a status symbol and the cool thing to do. I dont follow boxing much at all but used to always find a place to go watch 'the big fight'....for no other reason than it was 'the thing to do'.

You don't care that you dropped $100 and he hid the injury?

fwiw I think the result is the same even if he is 100%.....Floyd in a decision after a boring ass fight.

The same will happen in the rematch. They are close to 40, it's a fucking joke. Will you drop another $100 on that one?
Uhh no? I expected pac to be aggressive and I expected mayweather to play defense. And win. No knockouts.

The fight was entertaining to me and I don't get upset over a $100 purchase that I enjoyed.

A lot of buys came with this fight because people just wanted to say they watched it. It was almost like the Super Bowl. You had people who never watched a fight in their lives talking about it.

A social event, I agree. Boxing hurt itself, almost everyone who watched the fight felt ripped off and was bored to tears, this was a chance for boxing to make a statement to the general public and it felt more like a business transaction than a fight.

A number of things are becoming social events. Minor league and MLB......attendance has been very good not because of the game itself, but as it is something to do. Dayton Dragons have sold out over 1,000 games in a row.

Apparently there is a lawsuit against Manny, Bob Arum and Top Rank from ticket holders and PPV purchasers for failing to disclose the injury beforehand.

    You said, "the fight sucked."

    But you enjoyed it?

Maybe a 100% Pacman does more. His injury was significant enough to put him out for a year post surgery. Why didn't he reveal and postpone? Because he and everyone else involved gets an insane payday regardless of the outcome.

Yes, anyone who purchased the fight can show a receipt and get $8 back or something!

The fight did suck lol but it's what I expected and I still enjoyed having people over and watching it.

Heard MGM was going to use the rematch to unveil their new 20,000 seat arena, but are now backing away from the idea.

Could hurt the final number. They did themselves no favors with the $100 price tag with the casuals, a lot of people feeling ripped off after that stinker.
@darrenrovell: Mayweather-Pacquiao had more than 4.4 million PPV buys, generating more than $400 million

@darrenrovell: Mayweather-Pacquiao sold 46,000 closed circuit tickets for $150 each at MGM properties & was paid for by 5,000+ bars in the US.

I don't see any fight ever beating that, they had the whole sports world focused on that fight and a ton of casual buyers.

...and yet, the fight sucked in comparison to the Mohammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard classics.....

Just imagine what it would have done 5 years ago when it really would have been the fight of the century...

I was thinking that too, but I think the fact that they made the general public wait for 5 years made the fight more than what it was. They starved fans for years and let it build, making it an astronomically huge fight.

What were pay per view rates 5 years ago?
Could they have charged what they did this time around?
Waiting def did not hurt them. Sure...many said the fight was 5 years too late but dont think that kept many who would normally have watched it from the fight. Local place was showing it for free but still didnt feel compelled to see it

It was 5 years too late in terms of being competitive and watching two guys in their primes, was right on time when it comes to business and making money.
