LOL ... Plenty of good singles to hit if you have any bat control. The problem is that hitters are coming up to the majors not able or unwilling to bunt for a base hit or how to hit the ball the opposite way. For a long time , they put a premium the home run... And teams are willing to pay big bucks for it. Defensive shifts have been a way to counterbalance that and are forcing the pendulum to swing back to more complete hitters.IggyPride00;1699909 wrote:Why does everyone love the defensive shift so much? MLB had the 6th and 7th highest attendance in the history of the sport the past two years, down slightly from its peak only a few years ago. If there is a problem among younger people it is because there are more choices for youth sports. There was a time when nearly every young boy with any athleticism played little league in the summer. Now with the growth of other sports like soccer, more kids are growing up unfamiliar with the game, and that's a problem because if you are unfamiliar with the game, you are more likely to be bored. People that know the game and its strategies are not bored. People say it's dying because the national ratings are so low. However, the regional ratings, are probably through the freaking roof. Nobody watched the ESPN Sunday night game because we already watched our team on FSN or STO or whatever during the day. -

Exactly. Same thing for the saturday games of the week. I am a baseball guy but I dont watch the Sunday night games that often. After watching/listening to parts of all the reds games I dont care to watch some national game...especially yankees/bosox.
The contracts for the regional carriers are monsterous, and attendance is still high so those are good signs. -

Game just needs speeded up is all. Football can get away with being 3.5 hours because it's played only 12-15 times a year or 16-20 depending on the level and almost every game is during the weekend. Hockey and Basketball are popular because they're only 2.5 hours or a little less usually, it's not overly draining to watch a game on a weeknight. But when you have 162 games and almost all of them are over 3 hours, that's just too much on the fans. The only reason I've really became a huge baseball fan recently is because I finally got a DVR so I could watch each game in just about an hour-hour and a half.
The way lacrosse and soccer are growing, combined with almost all the best athletes exclusively playing football, the sport is really starting to suffer in America. Kids want to be Messi, or Lebron or Durant or Manning or Brady, not Trout or Cabrera -

Also I like the clock idea, hate the defensive shift idea. Other changes:
-Shorten the season. 162 is wayyy too fucking long.
-Salary cap.
-The wildcard "play in" should be a 3 game series. All three games played at the higher seed's stadium.
-The ALDS/NLDS should be a 7 game series.
-Get rid of divisions.
-Stop letting the all star game determine home field advantage for the WS. It was a knee jerk reaction by Selig, because he fucked up and ended an all star game in a tie. -

You have interleague play with a rival, and also matched up against a team that finished the same as you did the year before like the NFL does with two of the games each season.

So in the last 10 seasons MLB had more teams get to that level.

Many blame the pitchers, and there are some that are human rain delays, but the batters fiddle around more. PItchers for the most part want to get the ball and pitch again. Helps the defense as well for not standing around again. -

The baseball playoffs are such a crap shoot it doesn't surprise me. It is much tougher to consistently make the playoffs imo. Small market teams can make the playoffs and obviously win a title, but their window of opportunity is normally much smaller. Big market teams normally don't have to worry about what to do with two cy young pitchers on your staff, or 2 cy young pitchers and a MVP/future HOFer.thavoice;1700294 wrote:-Agreed. Too long. I know one stumbling block to a salary cap is that MLB teams are more seen as independent entities and brokering much bigger individual deals. NFL as a league has a huge contact deal with multiple networks, and teams have much smaller deals locally with radio and such. MLB teams negotiate with their local TV and some get insane $$$. I wish I could find the article that I read a few years ago bout how a cap in MLB wouldnt be as easy as the NFL. -
