  There is no way an umpire didn't see that second ball laying a few yards away from the Red's 2nd baseman. Play should have been stopped as soon as the play on Gomes was over. Can't believe that Tito didn't get irate.

  When a situation is not covered, Rule 9.01(c) comes into play. That rule gives the umpire authority to rule on any point not specifically covered in the Rules. In such instances the umpire is instructed to use "common sense and fair play."

  This rule was used when Randy Johnson hit the bird with the pitch.

  ^^^I found it hard to believe the explanation given by Rick Manning in the booth, that the umpire only has the authority to stop the game in the case of a power outtage or a player injury. You would think they(umpires) would have the authority to right anything that disrupts or destroys the integrity of the game....and that clearly disrupted the integrity of that game. It is bad enough if something random like a ball hitting a bird changes a play...but unacceptable that a thrown ball, whatever its origin, decieves runners or fielders such that play is corrupted. If MLB truly does not have a rule that covers that situation, they need to make one in a hurry, because there is apparently nothing to stop errant balls thrown purposely from the stands or 'by accident' from the bullpen from altering the outcome of a game.
  Moreso, and especially since you have a high tribunal sitting in NY that reviews call challenges, it most certainly is possible to have called them in for 'help'. It should be about getting things right.

  if that is a rule, then I'm furious that Francona did not protest the call...in fact, I thought it was negligent to just take it up the ass and accept the crew chiefs explanation without so much as asking the umpires to confer.

  I think the Umps blew this. The play was basically over. It was an easy double and no play on Murphy at 3rd.
  
  Sarbaugh could have done a better job of getting Murph on the base. He knew exactly what was going on and Murphy of course had no idea. Saying, "Right here. Right here." isn't good enough in that situation.

  I can't fault anybody but the umpires or the rules or lack thereof. As a coach of 24 years( and a baserunning coach at that,) we teach our players to round the base, find the ball and look for an opportunity to advance.

  Just saw the play...yeah. That was pretty messed up. I would like to know what the ruling SHOULD have been on that play.
  
  We had something similiar years ago. A wild pitch from the bullpen ocurred right when the regular pitch was coming in. Both balls end up behind home plate. The catcher turns around and sees a ball like 6 feet away (BP ball) and the pitched ball was by the backstop.
  Turned into an easy out. Opposing coaches came on out and the umps ultimately came to the conclusion that the runner would be safe at home.

  Absolutely but in that crazy situation the 3rd base coach should be yelling to help him out.

  I've coached third base and in those split second moments where you decide to send a runner or not, can you think fast enough to say "Right here!...and then state a reason?
  
  ...because no matter what the runner hears initially, he's taught to find the ball and go if he has a clear opportunity to advance. The runner hears...."right here, right here!" rounds the base,sees the loose ball, and then he takes off on instinct.

  He could have been fooled as well. I cannot see the play quite as well to know how far that guy was off of 3rd base when the throw was made. It is quite possilbe the 3rd base coach told him to stay, he rounded and saw the extra ball on hte ground and got off a bit too far.

  Agreed on the instinct reflex. The good players see it and react before even being told to go.

  I think that was his first HR in 192 AB....he keeps popping fastballs he gets Cozart. Negron's was legit.
