World Cup 2014

I still can't get rid of this freaking headache from the stressful/nerve wracking game.

I still cant get over how unlucky we got having to play 3 top 10 teams in our 4 games. A different draw and who knows?

Oh well, onto the Gold Cup. Wonder if Jurgen will be going with a B Squad again or not? Confed Cup is semi on the line...

When does the Gold Cup start?

    In a year lol.

Way to long to even be thinking about, but its the next thing of importance for the USMNT and I am having withdrawals tonight...

But, cannot wait till the Gold Cup next year, Copa coming to America and WCQ starting up for 2018. America finally looks like they have a legit team. Really sucks they only got to play 1 team who they had more raw talent than, and they got up so early they went into a defensive shell.
I'm going for Colombia and Belgium, both for financial reasons as well, lol. But I'm really excited like many of you are for the future of this team. Some really nice young talent that hopefully blossom into very good players. Would be really awesome to see them turn into a legit challenger to beat the top teams in the world consistently. Knocking on the door right now at least.

I agree with those who talked about the ball control being the killer. Howard had the best goalkeeping performance I've seen at this sort of level (not that I've seen a lot, but I saw on Twitter it was the most saves in a WC game of all time. He just was being riddled with shots because we couldn't keep them from the ball. Put some schlub in there and there's no attempted OT comeback because it's 5-0 after regulation the way they dominated the ball.

Yep. We have always had bright players who turned out well (Landon, Dempsey, Beasley and Bradley come to mind recently). But, the difference is now we seem to have role players 10x better than 10 years ago. Guys like Jermaine Jones (though he is about done with the USMNT), Graham Zusi, etc provide a legit team, not just a bunch of scrubs with a great player. That is why I am so excited...the US finally has a pool of players to choose from who all have actual abilities.

You expect Green, Yedlin and AJ to continue to grow and Fabian Johnson looks to be a stud in the making at RB. Just nice to finally see options all over the place.

Tim Howard might be my favorite soccer player ever. The guy puts in work time and time again and his post game interview was one of the best I've ever seen.

    1a. Brian McBride
    1b. Tim Howard

For me. Howard was fucking outstanding today.

Why is the copa America being held in back to back years?
  • Raw Dawgin' it
How much longer will Howard play? Without him it looked like it should've been 5-0.

Next year in normal rotation. 2016 for the 100th anniversary. Next year will be the one for the Confed Cup qualification I believe.

That seems odd. Also I wouldn't want to compete with the euro cup.

They wont be. Its actually gonna be amazing. Copa games in the AM, Euros at night. Soccer all day long.

Those federation tournaments are always getting moved around a lot.

But, in this instance I think it makes sense. They want the winner of the Copa advancing to play in the Confed Cup to be played in S. America and everything. So, thats why they arent skipping it and only have the 2016 edition.

In 2016, they wanted the US to host because of the economy, infrastructure and TV market (ESPN or whoever aint covering it in S. America, imo). They want to do it big and have huge stadiums for the celebration...but because of all that, they dont want anything OTHER than the trophy on the line (Confed Cup). Its also kind of a reward to CONCACAF, since COMNEBOL doesnt have enough nations for an even field, we always provide them with some teams. Nice that they are willing to let a CONCACAF nation host for the first time ever.

They still will be competing for coverage of the event. Copa America will be exciting though.

What part of my post are you referencing??

This is from a USA standpoint (because I don't think people in Europe will GAF about copa America and vice versa), but I'm referencing the am/pm schedule, which is awesome and shitty at the same time IMO. It will be tough to follow that much soccer in a one month span, plus the media coverage will be split or lean toward another tourney (I assume copa America since the US is in it).

IMO the euro cup is the 2nd best tourney (and you can make a case for tougher than WC) and there are a lot of Americans who follow uefa. It will be a bummer if their coverage/interest is cut into because of copa America. I wish the tourneys didn't overlap.

    Oh ok, gotcha.

I know Euros will be a week after Copa starts, not that it is a ton of time lol. So only 16 days will overlap...And then the last 2 weeks of Euro will be standalone.

    Copa: June 3-26
    Euro: June 10-July 10

I see what you mean about split coverage in the recap shows, but I dont think it will be too bad. Not sure if it will be good or bad that 2 different networks, ESPN with Euros and Fox with Copa, have the games (Assuming Fox doesnt fuck up their exclusive negotiating window and gets a deal done). I would think the federations will reach an agreement to not have overlapping game times, but who knows. Fox and ESPN will likely compete for the recap shows at night. Maybe one gives in and moves an hour later...

I wish concacaf/conebol would just unite and make the copa America tourney just like the euro cup. Get rid of the gold cup, and have teams go through a qualification process for the copa America. Not sure how many teams that would consist of with both confederations combined, but I would assume they could do a 16 or 24 team for at just like the euro cup.

Which btw, I wish the euro cup didn't expand to 24 teams. There won't be much drama in the group stages IMO.

I agree about Beckerman, never thought I would said I would miss seeing him.
While Ian Darke admitted whatever, there are still numerous media outlets that still are reporting the "controversy." Here is a Yahoo News article about it.

A flag straight up is the offside signal, supposedly the AR did that. Going straight up then parallel with the flag is "offside in the middle." But, just seeing the flag parallel, would make one think it's a goalkick in that situation. Everything I've read, saw, and heard, states that the AR did have his flag straight up.
  • Laley23
Well, FIFA doesnt have any offside calls for the game on record...

why would it be an offside call if he kicked it out of bounds? It seems like in soccer calls also depend on what happens after. Some fouls seem to be let go because that team still has possession even though they were fouled. So to me, it would've been offsides if he scored but since it went out of bounds it's just a goal kick.
