The catcher did not block the plate have no idea what Underwood was bitchin about. A good play by their defense.

its not about blocking the plate, but blocking the runner's path. seconds before Santana had to slide, the catcher was standing directly in Santana's path (no fault to his own, it was the throw that brought him from the inside of the plate to the backside).

Not sure, the problem seems to be no one knew what the rule meant. to me it means the catcher must leave a clear path to the plate. however the way it seems like its going to be enforced is only if the runner is forced to plow into the catcher.

part of the problem is no runners are challenging it on the field by making contact with the catcher. today I think Santana could have made an argument that the catcher stepped in the baseline forcing Santana to make a decision.

Just found an good article on it:
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10923040/major-league-baseball-working-clarify-collision-rule
Of 17 umpire-initiated reviews on plays at the plate, only two have been overturned. But MLB believes there should have been more calls reversed. The new video highlights two categories of calls that should have been a violation, La Russa said, but were allowed to stand.
The first involves plays where the catcher initially sets up properly to receive a throw, allowing the runner a path home, but then, "as he starts to receive the ball, sticks out his left leg to take the plate away," La Russa said. Those runners have been called out, and reviews have allowed those calls to stand. That interpretation is about to change, La Russa intimated.

"Several of the videos show that this move should be considered a violation," he said. "And it will be a violation."
I believe this is similar the situation with Santana. At first he was ok, but as he received the throw, the catchers right leg partially blocked Santana's path. Mike Sciosia has similar thoughts:
Angels manager Mike Scioscia told ESPN.com that he believes the key to clarifying the rule is simply to determine "when a play at the plate starts."

"Does it start when a ball is hit to the outfield?" Scioscia said. "Does it start when a runner tags third? Or does it start when a runner is 45 feet away [from home]? Because then a runner is obviously looking for the lane at some point that he's supposed to have from the catcher, right? So I think we've got to determine when does the play at the plate start. ... That has to be totally defined -- with us, with umpires and with replay officials."

I saw that play on replay and there was no problem. Santana was just out. period.

Need a win today to give us a chance to take the series.

I watched a couple more replays. Good baseball play by the catcher. If that isn't allowed, I am not sure what catchers should be doing. Santana would have had a chance with a hook slide towards the field. He needed to get down faster. He got tagged in the damn chest.

I have no problem the no call on blocking the plate and i wouldn't have challenged it were I Francona.

    some Tribe notes of interest:
    .
Jason kipnis is making progress towards and early June return. He is hitting off a tee. Kipnis is expected to take a minor league rehab assignment prior to re-joining the club.

Catcher George Kottaras, who made the most of his 1 game with the Tribe, (clubbing 2 HRs in May 4th's loss) and subsequently was DFA'ed almost immediately afterward, ....has cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA Columbus.

Wasn't he brought up for Gomes' paternity leave? I didn't think you had to use on option on a guy in that case. Must have thought wrong.

I think they brought up someone else for that...and then had to make another move. (cut Elliot Johnson?)

of course he was out, no one I think disagreed with that call. but was he forced out of the base path by the catcher being in front of the plate?
•Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the Umpire, the catcher, without possession of the ball, blocks the pathway of the runner, the Umpire shall call or signal the runner safe.
Santana does not have eyes in the back of his head to know where the ball is at. he sees the catcher moving into the base path milliseconds before he has to decide to avoid the catcher and where and how to slide etc.

I have no issue with collisions at the plate, but if you are gonna make a rule, you have to make it clear and enforce it.

It didn't appear that way to me at all.

Cabrrera hits into a bases loaded double play. Could have been a big inning.

I actually thought it was pretty clear he was in front, based on how the rule seems to be "written" as of now. But, as Mike Scocia said, we need to know if the ball taking you into the path counts as blocking.

I know he got really hot, like 11/13 or something insane, but having him in the 5 hole is one of the more puzzling decisions I have seen from Tito in 1+ years now.

He wasn't in front of the plate when the runner arrived and I didn't see Santanna change his line to avoid the Catcher.

Chisenhall with the RBI. Still 2 on with no outs.

I'd like to see them move the runners over and take a couple of chances getting them in.
  • Con_Alma
Got to have a better bunt and a better jump than that. Jeez

1st & 2nd with nobody out and they can't get another run in.

Santana goes deep after a Brantley double ... :)
  • Laley23
    Asdrubal is a moron lol.

Chiz now 3/3 today. Kid is really playing well this year. Still hasnt played versus a lefty I dont think, maybe 1AB. But he is doing all he can to make the "platoon" a tough choice for Tito. Really making a case to be playing everyday to see what he can do.
  • Laley23
    Annnnnd Brantley leaves the game.

God hope this is precautionary/not serious.
  • iclfan2
Oh god I hope Brantley isn't hirt
