Reds vs Cardinals...Game 1

  • mhs95_06
Now one of the keys to the season -- back to back Votto and Bruce vs a handpicked lefty reliever with the game on the line!
  • mhs95_06
Votto failed, but Reds win as Wong took his eyes off the ball trying to see if he should get the DP by stepping or tossing!
  • mhs95_06
Bruce -- try a smaller swing, try to tie it first!
  • mhs95_06
Nearly a fundamentally 100% correct play by Adams and the Cardinal infield.

    No runs there?

Brilliant strategy reds let see how it pays off for them.

Votto is one of the worst base runners I've ever seen.

I was afraid he was going to try for 3rd on the defensive play of the game and run into a DP with BP in the hotbox.

Not really, no. Reds game threads are pretty cool and calm. Until someone wants to compare kipnis to BP :)

I'll probably tell the offense to go fuck themselves if they lose a couple more in a row without scoring more than 1 run in a game. That's about it.

Just got home but moron sportswriter yelled out the final score so it saved me the viewing of the DVR

Someone else start the next game.

Gonna take this team some time to get away from the Baker/Jacoby plate approaches. My worries about Hamilton are well documented, but you can't really hold today against him, had to be a lot of nerves. This starting rotation could be really, really good, just hope they get healthy and hold up over the season.

I'll be honest. If you told me that Cueto was going to go seven innings and only give up 1 run, and that the beaten up bullpen would have held that, and that the Reds would have runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs in the 8th...I would have figured this was a W.

I think this team will be just fine this year. But with the injuries they have, and the tough April on the schedule, they could have a bit of a tough start.

The worry is, that's the same M.O. of last years team. The inability to manufacture runs given great opportunities. It killed us last year, hopefully the problem doesn't persist.

That's a valid point. I guess I'm just optimistic that a new manager and a new hitting coach will turn things around from last year. I saw what they were able to do with Heisey in the spring and it got my hopes up.

    There ya go, like_that.

It was one freaking game. No need to worry yet. Now if the same shit happens all month, then yes. But not now.

You are who the back of your baseball card says you are.
We all know that Hamilton strikes out alot. He just does.
No reason to think all of a sudden when he got to the bigs that it would change.

I think he can be a successful player, and I am not giving up on him after one atrocious game.

The issue is the reds front office handing over the leadoff spot to an unproven guy. MOnday looked alot like 2013 on the offensive side.

It is only one game, and you want to start well, but if they can take 2 of 3 vs the Cards then it doesnt matter.

Got to get the bats working tomorrow.

Anyone listen to much of Votto's offseason interviews on WLW sportstalk?

I thought they were pretty insightful. He sought out the station for this show to reach out to the fans. I missed one that they replayed yesterday during the pregame. They asked about his AB's in the spring and his average.
He talked about how come game time he was usually pretty exhausted from all the extra work he did that day/morning, did very little prep on whatever pitcher he was facing and mentally it is diff than the regular sesaon.

Just thought it was pretty cool.

but anyways.....they def need to get the bats going. I know it was only ST, and I know he has flopped in season, but I was thinking (and I bet he will) Heisey would get another chance. He did make a big change in his approach at the plate that could only help him. Plus he raked this ST. I could see him stepping in LF/CF and see how it shakes out.

I think the Reds probably get more of a pass from fans right now because they (a) changed manager (Dusty was, at the least, perceived as a major problem to postseason success due to his strategies), (b) have been working to lock up key players long term and (c) are injury-riddled right now, so a slow start probably was to be expected or at least wouldn't be a big surprise.

Will be a tough first month with the schedule and injuries. Some are more optimistic than I about getting guys back. WHen you start the season not healthy it is hard to get healthy during the long season.

I personally think 83-86 wins with this team.
