Top 5 cornerbacks
-
bigdaddy2003This question stems from an argument started on my Facebook. My friend says Haden is going to shut AJ Green down on Sunday and I disagreed. He then went on saying Haden is the best in the league which I don't necessarily disagree with but when I put Lardarius Webb in the top 5 I was laughed at by a friend. I was curious to see who everyone on here would put in their top 5.

Commander of AwesomeWell if you look at ProFootball focus: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/06/28/five-years-of-pff-grades-top-10-cornerbacks/ Webb isn't listed as a top 10 CB. This isn't for this year though so not sure if he's improved to be included.
There's also a few CBs here that have retired and probably fallen off. This list looks over last 5 yrs as well, so it's not a perfect metric.
For me, as a Raven hater outside looking in, Webb wouldn't be in my top 10 CB list and Haden would be in my top 3. So take it for what you want. -
Azubuike24I put Leon Hall in the top 5 earlier on this forum and was also disagreed with. Just going off the eye test though, it's hard to not put Flowers, Richard Sherman and Joe Haden up there too.
It's also very difficult to take a CB and rank them. You have certain schemes that allow a CB to show a lot more ability, and others that force them to do much more than just cover a WR. Leon Hall for example...not the best shutdown guy, but he's a great tackler and can play the run. He's also effective when asked to blitz. -

Look at Revis this year, playing a lot of zone. On sunday he was covering the RB coming out of the backfield. Really makes no sense the way that TB is using him, similar to what Philly did with Namdi. Scheme is a big part of it.Azubuike24;1505923 wrote:I put Leon Hall in the top 5 earlier on this forum and was also disagreed with. Also when the Browns are playing Ravens, I'm not worried about Webb. -

As I posted in the Browns/Bengals thread, haden has pretty much shut down Green each game until he has some idiotic mental lapse late in the 4th to allow a game breaking big play. He stays focus the whole game there is no doubt in my mind he can contain Green.bigdaddy2003;1505916 wrote:This question stems from an argument started on my Facebook. bigdaddy2003I figured he could limit Green but I didn't think shut out. I guess I will have to pay close attention Sunday.
So does anyone have a list? -
sportchamppsSherman
Cromartie
Champ Bailey
Patrick Peterson
Tillman
Joseph
Really besides Sherman I think 2-10 are all pretty close -

Haden
Sherman

That's my top 5. Not sure about 6-10. Whats your list BD? -
bigdaddy2003
This is mine as well. I'm moving Webb somewhere in the 6-10 range.Commander of Awesome;1505976 wrote: Revis

Pick6too subjective. Tramon Williams shut down AJ Green yesterday.

Azubuike24It's also difficult to take a WR's stats and then immediately judge the CB(s) who covered him that game and apply a grade.
Looking back, you can certainly find some games where a WR went absolutely crazy and did so with an elite CB on the other side. -

Webb wouldn't be on my mind when listing the next group. I haven't seen them enough recently to judge them, but Champ, Grimes, Joseph, Hall, Asomough, Tillman etc jump out to me way more than Webb. -

Ihis was kind of my thought as well, but not sure how much of this is based on reputation. Also I know Haden is a beast bc I watch the Browns every week. I don't watch the Ravens/Cards every week for example so I don't really have much to go on other than PFF bc stats for CBs are hard to come by like they are for other def positions.Laley23;1506016 wrote:Sherman

bigdaddy2003I watch every Ravens' game so maybe that is why I feel so strongly about Webb. He's not a top 5 but lets put it this way quarterbacks aren't throwing too many passes his way. Champ would be on my list a few years ago but being that he is older he has lost a step. Torrey Smith burned him 4 or more times alone in the playoff game last year. That wouldn't have happened 5 years ago. Asomough (spelling?) looked like a bad ass in Oakland but I can't say he lit it up in Philly.

Ironman92I'd have Webb in my top 5 for sure. IMO he's one of the best.

I would put Cary Williams right up there with Webb.bigdaddy2003;1506024 wrote:I watch every Ravens' game so maybe that is why I feel so strongly about Webb.
