    Yep, HOFer
  • Rotinaj
It all depends on what the voters do with suspected users. I think he's a douche so ill say no he doesn't get in.
  • Tigerfan00
Very little to debate here. He will hit 500 homers, 1500 RBI's and over 2000 hits by the time he is done. He already has his ticket to Cooperstown.

He's well on his way....but not playing defense and being a horrible base runner he needs to close out his career with 1600 RBI, 2250 hits, near 1100 extra base hits.....his walks and rings afford his numbers to lack in totals a bit.

He needs a little more for me.
  • Iliketurtles
Right now if his career ended I don't think he would get in but I think eventually he will get around the numbers Ironman listed and he will get in the Hall of Fame.
  • Sonofanump
    3rd ballot.

Me too. Marginal at this point...but he's not done. 500 Hrs and 1600 RBI's and he's no doubt.
  • Laley23
Yes. Because he is the best to ever play a position. Regardless of what you think of the DH, he is the best to ever play it.
  • like_that
As Rot said, he is a douche, so no.
  • Commander of Awesome
Also he doesn't play baseball. He's a fat fuck who DH's. No DH should be in the HOF IMO.

    I say Edgar was better.

Really? Edgar played to 41 and the numbers already are close with a slight edge to Ortiz overall. His power numbers are significantly better, IMO.
  • said_aouita
    HoF nickname.

I agree with the gym teacher. He gets in but not on the first ballot.

Yeah....it's close. Take a few minutes and really look into it.

Here's some stuff. First, in DH statistics Edgar had around 1550 games and around 5600 AB, Ortiz is around 1700 games and 6200 AB.....as for overall totals Edgar has more games and AB but it's quite close.

Anyways, Edgar was screwed over by the shitty Mariners of the late 80's...they let him rot in the minors while they were atrocious in the majors. Edgar didn't get regular starts until age 27! At age 26 he hit .367 with a .984 OPS in the minors. At age 25 he hit .329 and just got a handful of big league games. Age 24 he was also over .300 with just a few big league AB....no clue why he want a full time starter in 1987 and 1988.

Edgar's career OPS is at .937
    Edgar had an OPS over .975 6x and 5x over 1.000......Ortiz was over .975 4x I believe and 3 over 1.000

OPS+ is OPS but factors in the ballparks played and Edgar who played in the Dome, Oakland and Anaheim for about 100 games a year while Ortiz played in friendly Fenway, Yankee Stadium and Skydome about 100 games......Edgar's career OPS+ is 147 and Ortiz at 131.

I also just have trouble believing Ortiz isn't near Manny's PED level. His power numbers went out the roof once he came to Boston. He was a big guy in Minnesota and a good player.....but not a 47-54 HR guy like soon thereafter in Boston.

    Hitting Ortiz had a very nice .332 year and is at .318 at age 37 this year, while Edgar had a .343, .356, .330, .324, .337, .322, .331

If you ask me the best hitting DH of all-time I'm going with Edgar. Ortiz may have the HR and longevity but I'd take Edgar....Ortiz easily the #2 guy.
  • Laley23
As a pure hitter, Edgar. But for me, at DH, I want power (HRs and RBI). Ortiz has him there.

    Splitting hairs though.

RBI is very contingent on many outside factors
  • Ironman92
    RISP

    Ortiz .940 OPS
    Edgar .930 OPS

    Home
    Ortiz .967
    Edgar .940

    Away
    Ortiz .887
    Edgar .927

The biggest difference on your side if you want RBI out of the DH...Ortiz has the better slug % which will drive in more runs whereas Edgar has the better OB%. Ortiz drives more in but when Edgar isn't making outs as often when not driving them in (Jay Buhner says thanks)

Ortiz has the big HR/RBI seasons and looking at every split Edgar is one of the most consistent hitters I've ever seen.

Ortiz peak years (and a little still) sure make me wonder.
  • Ironman92
Ortiz's highest slugging % for the Twins was .500

His next 5 seasons (and first 5 seasons with the Sox) his AVERAGE slug % was .610. Lowest season was .592
  • Laley23
Ortiz is a juicer no doubt.

I wasnt factoring that in though.

    2nd ballot lock ;)
  • Commander of Awesome
No player who has played the majority of his games at DH has achieved either of HoF. Hope this helps.

Frank Thomas is on the ballot for the first time next year...

    Thoughts on The Big Hurt???

Nope. I would say no to every DH, esp one from this era. Big Hurt is a juicer IMO, though I think every baseball player from 1985-2011 was roiding.
