That interview should last one question. Something along the lines of "would you like this job?".

The worry would be when Francona follows up with questions of his own pertaining to things like salary and what moves the management will make in order to help him out on the team-building/game-winning process.

    Big stumbling points.

Francona here would be like Lou Piniella with the Devil Rays. Waste of time.

Getting back from across the pond....

...to find out the Tribe fired Acta.I Lol'd....6 days left in the season.SMFH. What a bunch of crap. Make this move a month or 6 weeks ago if you are going to do it, and get a preview of Alomar as a manager. This front office has been asleep on the switch since the middle of the PREVIOUS season.I have mixed emotions about Acta getting the axe...but only because he kept a crap team competitive for a hundred games. That's to his credit. Personally, I wasn't a fan, of his, but the problems experienced by this franchise the past few years are due to an owner who doesn't put winning at a higher priority than making a profit. Secondarily, the front office has squandered what little resources they have. Compared to the guys up front, Acta looks like a genius.

Forget about Francona. I'll give you one(the only) reason why he would take the job.

He would take the Indians job if no one else was offering and he wanted a paycheck. No way does skin flint Dolan outbid someone for his services. No way would Francona want to operate under these conditions. No...the Tribe goes the cheapest route, and that is to hire Alomar.

The Tribe needs to save all the cash it can just to get players.....I mean, you have to pay players even if they hit .230.

    Does anyone have another reason?
  • BRF
I would like to say that I was actually stunned at the timing of this firing. Like Hits was saying and then I'm saying WTF, with just a few games left? The Tribe was actually playing some decent ball, then the axe falls......with six days left. Puh-lease.
  • OQB
They should of let him go after the first big losing streak....and been able to evaluate Alomar the rest of the year.

Oh wait they don't know how to evaluate! :o

Since we have no Tribe/Royals thread this is as good a place as any to ask.

Who in their right mind would stil be at a Indians/Royals game approaching midnight in the 14th inning in September when both teams are 20+ games out of the playoff hunt?

I am flipping through channels and just saw on STO the game is still going, and there are still a decent amount of people there. God love them, but there is not a chance in hell I last that long at a meaningless game like that.

HitsRus was nice enough to let me use his tickets tonight. I admit that I stayed at the Horseshoe too long before the game and arrived late, and given the score at the time and this teams' track record I bailed out early. I did not feel quite as bad, as people were both arriving later and leaving earlier than me and the fiance. I did see the end of it on TV, lol

I thank Hits for his generosity though, as we did have a good time for the time that we were there.

Why would any man in his right mind want to work for those Dolans. MEMO: If ya wanna win ya gotta spend some money; or get a better farm system. Either way $$$.

    Indian's Logic:

In the words of Antonetti, "the Indians have been in first place more than any other team in baseball the past 3 years."
  • BRF
I was reading the remarks of Perez in the Wooster Daily Record today. Kinda hits on why I didn't care much for Acta.

    That quote was stunning.

They are beyond clueless, and sadly don't even realize how out of touch with their fan base they really are.

Francona was on PTI and said he wanted the Indians job and was joking around about sucking up to management. I'd say he is taking the job? Home run hire if that is the case
  • BRF
I hope so. His dad, Tito, was my first favorite player.................back in the day.

No way in hell they offer enough money, considering how tough of a job that will be to win with no sign of anything changing ever up front.
  • BRF
    And....the season has mercifully ended.

The Indians management is so so out of touch. Antonetti had the gall to make a statement that the Tribe had spent more time in 1st place in the last three years than any other team in the Central. What a joke !! As long as the Dolans own this team it will not be a serious contender. Deep pockets; short arms. Cleveland needs an owner like Detroit has. The Dolans wasted money on the likes of Damon,Lopez Kotchman, Fukadome,Lillabridge, ect. And his name escapes me right now but the RH starter who is now in the NY bullpen. I know there are other ''cheap'' signings. And who do those idiots think the're fooling. How long has Alomar been an employee? They need to make a splash so they announce an interview with him. Reading between the lines it becomes obvious. The job is Francona's if he wants it.
  • assumption
If Tribe fans saw the interview that Bruce on STO did with Antonetti you could tell he was very uneasy. Really had no direct answers to important questions. The Dolans must be very tough to work for. Antonetti seemed so uncomfortable almost to the point of being scared.

I think Chris is on notice, and realized that it could have been him as well as Acta who got the axe. I don't think he has answers as to why the season just went south so fast.
I don't think Terry Francona is going to make a difference if the Dolans don't give the front office a little support when it comes to signing players. I think the Tribe would be wise to hire Alomar...and save the money it would take to get Francona, and put it toward players. Red Sox just canned Valentine...I would not be surprised that if the Tribe drags it's feet, Sandy could end up there.

I agree Hits, especially after reading the Beacon Journal today.

I am not sure Francona has fully grasped how different it will be managing in Cleveland as opposed to Philly and Boston.

I know he is desperate to get back in the game, but he is in a position to be selective about where he wants to go and given his background I don't see this being a long term fit.

He is used to working for organizations that went all out financially to bring in any pieces and parts needed to put the team over the top. Boston and Philly are both huge markets with huge payrolls.

He has never had to manage a team where the roster doesn't improve no matter how close you are, and free agents are something other teams do. He also won't have a front office that provides him elite talent from the minor leagues because our front office has proven to be completely incompetent as far as talent evaluation goes.

I could easily see a scenario where he gets here and after a few years of mediocrity and ownerships refusal to spend money he throws up his hands and wants out. I am sure he thinks he has a handle on the cost constraints going into it, but it will only be when he is in the thick of it and no help is on the way that he will realize how miserable the Cleveland situation really is.

Jim Leyland is supposedly not long for the world in Detroit (68 years old), if I were a guy like Francona I would wait for that job to open up. With 2 world series rings he will be the front runner for any opening he would actually want, he should be a little more selective unless he is just that desperate to get back in the game.

I agree. I think that our front office is just making it look like they are trying...and maybe Francona is just practicing interviewing! ha ha!

I would look for poor Sandy to be the manager.
