NFL History 1989 Season

  • Footwedge
Browns fans remember the 86 and 87 campaigns with much chagrin, But the 89 season was brutal in it's own right.

Opening day saw Bud's boys lay a 51-0 thumping on Chuck Noll's boys in Pittsburgh on opening day. Pittsburgh followed that game up with a 42-10 dousing by the Bengals. Yes, Pittspuke was a combined 10-93 in points after 2 games.

Did you know? In 1989, Chuck Noll won the coach of the year that season? Yup, he did. And...that was the only coach of the year that he ever won.

So how did that happen? In game 6, Pittsburgh avenged the 51-0 blowout in Cleveland by winning 17-7 on the shores of the lakefront. Not only that, Pittspuke made the playoffs with a 9-7 record. Then they won their first playoff game AND they had Denver beaten on the road in playoff game 2....until they got "Elwayed" in the final seconds. Had they not gotten Elwayed, the Browns would have hosted them in the 1989 championship game.

Elway's miracle drive that season against Pittsburgh probably prevented the Browns from making the Super Bowl that year, as the Browns would have been huge favorites in the title game at home.

As for the title game itself, the Browns laid an egg and lost 37-21 to Denver...on the road.

    I sense some bitterness....

    Another reason Cleveland hates Elway.

I thought a Shitsburgh fan would applaud my little plug.

I remember that loss to the Broncos. Bubby Brister was our QB then. Tough loss.

Solid thread. Can you cover the 1912 Athletics?

    FIFY

Not applauding anything...just noting someone's still a little upset over something that happened over 20 years ago.

Not upset at all. Just thought I'd share some history on a cool season. I remember watching the Bronco Steeler game and being torn as to who to root for.

The Browns lucked out when a Buffalo receiver dropped the winning touchdown pass with 15 seconds to go, putting the Browns in the title game The Steelers played great ball in the late season, and the thought of losing to them in the title game was worrisome.

Not too many Browns fans remember the scenario, and don't remember how it ended. Unlike 86 and 87, the Denver game was not a tear jerker.

I remember the 89 season. The Browns pulled a no show in that championship game against the Donks. Game wasn't as close as the final score.

No, but I handle the 81 Niners SB without looking it up. They went 15-1 in the regular season with their only loss being to the Browns, 15-9.

The 1980 Niners were worse than the 2011 Browns.

I believe their SB win in 1985? Was with just one loss....to Pittsburgh

The 1981 49ers went 13-3. They lost to Browns 15-12. The 49ers 15-1 season was the 1984 season (Super Bowl in Jan. of 1985). The 1980 49ers were 6-10 vs. the 2011 Browns going 4-12. Lindy Infante was the Coach of Year in 1989.

Well...I was close. I said I was going by memory. But you are wrong on Noll being coach of the year in 89...

"However, the team would rebound and despite being a huge long shot to make the playoffs, the Steelers by a miracle managed to clinch the final playoff spot in the last week in the season with a 9–7 record. Chuck Noll, in his 21st season as the team's head coach, was named the NFL's Coach of the Year for the only time in his coaching career.

Chuck Noll was never Coach Of the Year.

This thread proves that Chuck Noll, without any available rebuttals, sucked.

You're the dumbass that cites wikipedia (lolfail, /like_that'd), then call me an asshole for proving you wrong, after you were already told you were wrong? That makes sense. Do your research a little bit before trying to tell someone else they are wrong.

Notice, my second link is from wikipedia as well. Asshole.

Yes. I see exactly what you did. You proved to everyone that you act like an immature child when shown that he's wrong instead of just saying "Hey, my bad, I was wrong."

Congratulations on acting like a child.
