Reds vs. Padres: Game 2 & Trade Deadline

Today's the day. We'll see if Walt makes a move. I think it will be more of a play for Overbay, than a trade.

Would be nice to get a starting pitcher. I'm not big on getting a leadoff guy, as I think a combination of Heisey/Stubbs/Valdez will be fine until Billy Hamilton is up here.

I really don't want them to make a "small" or "decent" move. Either stand put, or get someone like Ellsbury or a Greinke type SP.

I wouldnt give up too much. This team already has the best, or second best, record in baseball and now someone OTHER than votto is starting to hit the ball.
Arroya calls himself the weak link in the SR, but he has a sub 4 era I think. LEake is the guy who I am concerned about, but to be honest with ya I dont know if there is a guy out there that I would be willing to take on this roster taking this year and for the future of the franchise. A SP would be nice....but the reds have a pretty darn good rotation. A LO guy would be nice...but whom and what would we give up and who would go? I still like BP in the LO spot and then see whom would work best in the 2 hole

Yea, I'm fine with Leake, and with our rotation as a whole. I actually would trust Bronson in a playoff series. Also, I'm not worried about what happened with Leake last night. He was squeezed big time, and the ump forced him to get the ball up and out over the plate. I actually think he was hitting his spots pretty well. I wouldn't mind Overbay to replace Cairo. He's a better hitter, can play first, and is a left handed bat.

Agreed. The most glaring issues on the team is the bench. Cairo's time is up. Paul has been doing pretty well, and Valdez has been OK as well but Miggy's time is done. I just hope they dont make a deal just to make a deal. We as Reds fans, and to be honest every fan of teams do this, see the glaring holes in their team but if ya take a step back and look...the reds have a damned good record and that was after a poor start to the season.

If VOtto comes back and just plays like himself and some of the other guys keep stepping up then this team is going to be very tough to beat. Sometimes last night happens. I didnt see it early but I know the Creeper was making comments about the umpiring, and from the replay it looked like the pitch that Meso got tossed on was right there. It was almost like he didnt get too fired up until the umpire said something. I have been in a situatio before when ya questio a call and the response you get from the umpire pisses you off more than the actual call itself.

but anyways......sometimes we forget that the opponants are big leaguers too and this will happen sometimes.

I would love to have a lead off hitter for the stretch run/playoffs, but I don't want to mortgage the future in doing so. (Hamilton will not be leading off for the big club until at least September 2013, barring injury to Cozart or Phillips).

I still think they will find a decent bench bat and cut Cairo loose. The guy just doesn't have anything left.

Hamilton has been doing very well at AA. When you get to AA you are just one phone call away. Now I dont think that he will be up and starting this season (I could see him coming up with the rosters get expanded possibly) but who knows about next year. I dont know if he will be at SS tho.

agree with cairo tho..as most of us do, so you know what that means dont ya.....he will have a huge game soon

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Reds are talking to the Twins about CF Denard Span. Says there's a 50/50 chance of it being done, depending on how reliable Scott Miller of CBS Sports is.

Anyone think that Stubbs turning it on the last week or so has anything to do with trade rumors about getting a top of the order guy?

I'm really coming around to the Span move. He's signed through 2014, and his salary isn't bad unless the Reds would pick up his '15 option for 9 million. How about this lineup for the Reds next season.

    Hamilton LF/CF
    Span LF/CF
    Votto
    Phillips
    Bruce
    Frazier
    Cozart
    Meso/Hanigan

Span and Hamilton could wreak havoc on the bases, with plenty of power between Votto, Phillips, Frazier, and Bruce to back them up.

I wouldn't mind getting Span. Who do the reds have left for trade bait on the farm? I would like them to go get Garza too

Mostly pitching. Corcino, Cingrani, Sulabran, Joseph, and Lotzkar. Gregorious, Soto, and LaMarre are the best prospects that would be traded. Didi and Soto don't really have positions, unless injuries happen.

At the game and up close last night....Cairo has the shortest swing ever, cheats early and still could only muster foul ball over the Reds dugout. I hate to see the end for good guys....but he's toast

Not sure Dusty and Walt will do that....my guess would be sending down the .500 hitting lefty X.....but the right move is glaringly obvious.

We won't have Span....that would mean losing Stubbs.

    That's a dream of mine.
  • slcoach
I truly feel that Stubbs is starting to put it together. I don't want to see us give up on a 3rd year 1st round pick just yet.

Mark Sheldon did tweet that he is not in the lineup tonight.

Span vetoed a trade to the Reds

    Heisey in CF tonight
    Valdez at SS
  • Rotinaj
Lol why the hell would he veto a trade to the reds?

He doesn't have a no trade clause.

Stubbs doesn't sit, I have to believe something is going on, especially when they just had a day off on Thursday, and Stubbs has been playing well.

On MLBTradeRumors, all I saw was that a Reds source downplayed the Span rumor, so I don't know if it will happen or not or what's going on.
  • zach24oz
He's a POS if he vetoed the trade. He has as chance to play for a team that's in a pennant race and turns it down. And you would have to think that the reds would trade Stubbs if they traded for another CF.

Heyman has since tweeted that it isn't happening, but Jocketty has been very good at keeping his trade talks very quiet.

Also, Reds talking to Royals about Broxton, apparently.
  • Heretic
And now...Jon Heyman says Span won't be happening....however, the Reds are looking into getting Jon Broxton.
