Do Sports Cause Lack of Common Morals?

  • Ironman92
I didn't know how to title the thread...and what was said could be commonplace from an 8th grade fan...but today....IN school...in the library a 50ish something adult who appears to be very unassuming and no look of someone who ever played a sport was speaking with a male teacher (HUGE Bengal fan).....the guy is a traveling media guy who picks up and delivers elementary videos to schools. The two are simply speaking of the death of Chris Henry. I ventured up to the library to talk a little with the other teacher about it as well. As I am in the middle of the discussion the traveling media guy says "it's too bad it had to happen to Henry...why couldn't it have been Hines Ward that fell out of the truck?"

I couldn't believe he just said that....I just looked at him and said...."you know what...I really don't root for anyone to die"

It may be wondered why we get so caught up in athletes....but some of the things people say or even think about opposing players are just truely unbelievable.

    Sarcasm?

People never cease to amaze me...

    His tone sucked for sarcasm.

There are few more sarcastic than I am.....I couldn't even fathom joking about such a thing.

I actually feel the opposite. Sports gives us a view of the professional sides of these people.. That guy probably hates Ward b.c of his great talent on a football field, while people hate Kanye West not b.c of his music, but because he's a shitty person.

I have a hard time believing that.. you know how many times I've said "Jesus I wish (insert OSU player here) would get hit by a Mac Truck!"

99.9% of sports fans have said something similar at least once in their lives.

I don't like a single thing about kanye West....I hate nearly everything I know of him......and I'd never joke about him tragically dying.

Again....it's something an 8th grader might say.

Sarcasm has a time and place...even if he was being sarcastic he's still a douche bag.

    ^^^^^^^ ding, ding, ding

Saying you wish an OSU player would get hit by a Mack truck is one thing...but saying it as an adult just after a Michigan player DID get hit by a Mack truck would be another level...he was at the other level.....and two levels too high.

Yeah, we joke about that type of thing. But from the way I92 laid it out, it sure seems like this guy was being pretty serious.

I dont even root for other teams players to be injured (again, unless in jest) let alone for someone to fall off a truck and die!

I never EVER say (or wish) ill of a player, even for those who play at places like *ichigan :) It's simply bad Karma to do so. You'll end up having your best player get hurt.

So now I have to ask: which of you idiot Buckeyes said something ill toward Jujuan Howard or whoever and got Evan Turner on the shelf?

To me, if you have any kind of competitive blood in your body, you want your rival(s) to always be at their very best. That way, when you face them, you are giving YOUR absolute best. To wish harm or death upon an opponent no matter how much hate/dislike you have for them makes me question your competitive nature. Just one man's opinion.
