Fingers also started 37 games during his career. so more than likely he was drafted and treated like a long reliever( i wasnt alive, i wouldnt know first hand). He also would have about as many saves in a year as Perez does by the all star break. he would be more comparable to a chris sale instead of chris perez.
the year Fingers won the Cy Young ('81) he only pitched 47 games, 78 innings and went 28/34 for saves. during his career, Fingers averaged 59 games per year. Perez is averaging 61 games per year.
in Perez's 3 full years in the MLB ('09,'10,'11) he pitched 61, 63, 64 games for 57, 63, and 59 innings and never blew more than 4 saves.
why pitch them more innings per game when they are dominating the 1-2 innings they already pitch? by letting them get through the batting order more than once, the odds of the batters getting a good read on them goes up.
