2-3-2 or 2-2-1-1-1

  • thavoice
What do you prefer in a 7 game series?
And do you think either one gives a team an advantage?

I always kinda thought the 2-3-2 wasnt too bad for the away team. Split the first two on the road, win 2 of the next three at home, and split on the road again.

2-2-1-1-1. I think 2-3-2 honestly gives the advantage to the non home court team.

2-2-1-1-1, for sure. I really don't get why the NBA chooses to go 2-3-2 for the Finals only. If they had it 2-3-2 throughout the playoffs, sure, but only the Finals is dumb to me.

West Coast/East Coast travel is the reason I believe.

Would help to know the winners of the NBA finals over the time span of the 2-3-2 format, are they the teams with home court advantage or not?

Still seems weird that it's not a concern when the Clippers have to travel to Memphis (1,607 miles, two time zone difference), but if they had to go to Chicago (1,744 miles, two time zone difference), look out. I'd just ask for consistency. Heck, make it 2-3-2 the whole time, but don't change it just for the Finals.

If so, that's gay. Not like these franchises can't afford it.

They should do a 1-3-3. That would be boss.

    Garfield 1 - 2323.

    That's for you, BR.

To the OP: I like the thread. There are some interesting thoughts.

2-2-1-1-1 is the way to go. As said before, it's utterly stupid that you do that up to the finals and then make it 2-3-2. Regardless of whatever rationalization, it's just stupid.

No tougher to win 3, 4, and 5 than it is 3, 4, and 6. Up to two less off days per round is a good thing.

They should just make the entire tournament 2-3-2. Problem solved.

    I don't like the 2-3-2.

Homecourt team may never get back to their homecourt under that format and would have played less games at home than the lower seed.

2-2-1-1-1 makes too much sense, I guess. The big problem is, the Finals is the only series that does so... The East/West travel argument doesn't really fly when you have 16 teams doing it to start the playoffs.

I don't think 2-3-2 is done for the East/West coast reasoning. I had heard it is because of the amount of media coverage and the people that are at each Finals game. Having them travel from city to city twice is a lot more manageable then getting all of these people back and forth several times usually in a 48 hr window.

The LDS round of baseball this year is back to 2-3 again. Horrible format. The higher seed could be in a 2-0 hole before they even get to play at home.
