Correct, up to the owner, and whether he wants to run it as a business or a hobby. Hobbying is why the salaries are ridiculous. I think Castellini has gone from business to hobby!jordo212000;1140551 wrote:Baseball makes alot its bank from media deals and MLB.com advertising / sales
81 home games with 20,000 in attendance buying overpriced beer and food doesn't hurt though. Baseball owners have no shortage of cash. And besides McCourt all owners were incredibly wealthy beforehand as well. Whether they want to keep a star player is really completely up to the owner -
wildcats20That makes no sense to me.

Lol I think you're looking too much into it, mhs.mhs95_06;1140629 wrote:Correct, up to the owner, and whether he wants to run it as a business or a hobby. Hobbying is why the salaries are ridiculous. I think Castellini has gone from business to hobby!
If you get a Votto type player, you pay him...it's that simple. -
zach24ozJust an ugly and boring game to watch if you're a Reds fan...only 3 hits and they're all singles. Hopefully Leake pitches well tomorrow and we get some sort of O going. Any other news on BP if he'll play tomorrow or just take the day off?

wildcats20Dusty said postgame that he would most likely be out.

saltoSorry, this thread is hilarious. I'm a huge Cardinals fan, but how can you guys go from being unbelievably over optimistic to sounding like your ready to throw in the towel....mid-way through one game? The Cardinals came out of the gate hot. They blew through spring training with the best record of any NL team and Westbrook was the hottest pitcher on their staff through all of spring training. They are the hot team right now. The Reds will be fine, and the Cardinals will cool off some. This division is still going to be decided by these two teams, IMO. Relax, we still have 157 left. Good luck and hope this one goes to the wire.

mhs95_06What do you think the over/under is on how many games go by before BP plays again? 5, maybe 6 games? I already said 13!

wildcats201.
I say he plays Wednesday. -

Yes, we are all ready to throw in the towel after 4 games. Derp. -

Who threw in the towel? You can say that the team looked like shit today without throwing in the towel...salto;1140704 wrote:Sorry, this thread is hilarious. Any and all criticism means you've given up on the entire season. It's science. -

Science sucks!
Go Reds! -

Last years weather to start the year was awful. Seemed like every April game was really cold and/or raining. Was surprised the crowd was so light tonight even with it being a little chilly. I could understand if they played the Astros but its the Cardinals. -

Not true. FSN has 2 feeds. FSN Cleveland, FSN Cincinnati. Both are masked under "FSN Ohio" but show local programming. Those north of Columbus, have "FSN Cleveland" but it's primarily, if not all northern sports programming. Those south of Columbus, have "FSN Cincinnati" but it's primarily, if not all southern sports programming.wildcats20;1140600 wrote:Something I don't understand about FSO...
Fab4 leaves in Akron. I'm up there every other weekend(basically). When the Cavs aren't on, FSO won't(maybe they aren't "allowed") show Reds games. I mean I get the fact that Akron is basically IN Cleveland, but there are plenty of Reds fans across the state. So instead of Reds games they just show random shows.
In Columbus, I know AT&T shows both feeds, meaning we have 2 FSN Ohio HD's. They show all different local programming. We get all Cavs games, all Reds games and all Blue Jackets games. The Reds/Cavs never conflict because they are NOT on the same channel. You either get one or the other. The Blue Jackets do conflict sometimes, but generally will be alternated on whichever feed, Cleveland or Cincinnati that isn't showing a local game.
The cable providers, notably Time Warner and Insight don't advertise this. Neither does FSN. They just call it "FSN Ohio" and that's it. That's why you see so many complaints of "the Cavs are on and I'm seeing the ******* Blue Jackets" (this happened on Cavs opening night to Columbus viewers this year). Technically, the game is being broadcasted, your local provider has the stations available to purchase, they just choose not to.
North and South of Columbus, providers outside of DirecTV and Dish Network are not allowed to carry both stations. That's why when you go to Cincinnati, you wouldn't even know they show the Cavs on FSN Ohio...because to them, they don't. -

Obviously it's a very simplified view of it. However, it holds water IMO. Consider this...jordo212000;1140602 wrote:That's an antiquated view of things IMO. Putting games on TV helps build interest in your product, not hurt it. Living close to Athens, I can only make a handful of games each year. If they start limiting the games on TV, I'll lose interest in the Reds / baseball because I have no clue what is going on.
The "not show games because people aren't coming" view is kind of old school. Football can do it because they only have 8 games to sell. With 81 baseball doesn't have that luxury
1. The Reds have one of the best play by play announcers in sports, Thom Brennaman. Like him or not, he's been a top-tier broadcaster for the Fox Network for 15 years, does NFL, MLB and BCS games for Fox. He's very prestigious, so much so that he was able to negotiate his own schedule with Fox AND take the gig as full-time Reds TV/radio play by play guy.
2. The Reds have arguably the best and most loyal radio listeners in the sport. Until Marty hangs it up or croaks, it will remain this way. Regardless of whether it's the Cowboy, Thom, Jim Kelch or whoever in the booth with him, radio listeners remain strong. Add to this, the Reds are broadcasted on the AM dial in 8 states. There are loyal listeners to Reds on radio all over the Midwest.
3. Tickets to attend games aren't getting any cheaper. People can bitch and moan all they want, and I'm not one to do that about prices of stuff. The market drives the cost of stuff...but to many, purchasing a 60-inch HD TV, paying 100 bucks a month for 100+ HD channels and watching 153 games a year while sitting on the couch has become the way of life. To me, there's nothing like being at the park, soaking up every moment, every pitch, every situation...but I was raised that way. Most folks weren't, and aren't going to go more than once a year or so.
Maybe we are on the same page here, but I was more commenting on the TV deal. The TV deal for the Reds is strong. The next one is only going to be stronger. -
justincredibleThe current TV deal for the Reds sucks ass. Not sure why you say it is strong.

Yea, I think I read somewhere that they are only getting about 30 million a year out of it.justincredible;1140819 wrote:The current TV deal for the Reds sucks ass. Not sure why you say it is strong. -
thavoiceThey were discussing on WLW last week that you can expect the REds to approach FSO to redo the contract for alot more money because of the signing of Votto.....or come up with their own statio nto show games like STO.
I think showing games on TV increases interest in the game. You wanna go after the kids to get them hooked onto the team. Make a kid a fan, ya have him for life. (except for those JO bandwagon fans). Kids wont pay attention to the games on the radio.
I can remember growing up it was a HUGE deal when the reds were on TV. Fox55 out of fort wayne (and this was before there was a national fox network) started to carry some Cubs and REds games. I can remember watching when they would be on and then nagging my parents to take me to the reds game. Listening to them on the radio as a kid never generated that type of response from me. -

Azubuike24The deal isn't strong...but it's also over a decade old. Their new deal will be one of the best. Like someone said, wouldn't surprise me if they started their own gig like STO...FSN is weak and a dying breed IMO.
