Nike and the NFL

I think the pro combat style will be sweet in the nfl. Though some will look dumb in it. Big Ben comes to mind.
I hope they make some minor changes and I too would be ok with a change to the browns uni's.

I hope they make Big Ben's incredibly tight.

I'm pretty sure BIG Ben will make it tight regardless.

When they practiced on base here last week, I couldn't believe how big he looked compared to rivers and dalton. He looked like a lineman.

I wouldnt expect NFL teams to have the endless designes of uniforms like they do in college.

The NFL has diff rules regarding uniforms. You can have three sets. Home. Away. and one alternate. Alternate unies can be worn a certain amount of times a season 2-3 I think, and only in home games, and NOT in the postseason. Also...I am pretty sure you have to keep that alt jersey for 3-4 seasons before changing it.

Also the NFL is contemplating this rule.
Potential new rules are a shot across the bow. Word came out over the summer that the NFL was considering new rules limiting alternate jerseys to non-prime games prior to Week 10, because the proliferation of alternate looks could "potentially compromise a club's national brand equity." Does that sound like a league that's planning to go bonkers with crazy uniform designs to you? If anything, it sounds like a pre-emptive move to ensure that Nike will have little effect on the league's look.

The steeles have said no new uniforms changes for them, but expect a new alt jersey next year.

Wrong. Teams control their uniforms. That means Nike can't make the stupid shiny object uniforms that appeal to mindless high school/ college aged kids and force them on NFL franchises. It does however mean that NFL teams can consult Nike and come up with a uniform refresh.

No. I am not wrong. teams can have 3 uniforms. Home. Away. and alternate and there are rules on when they can wear the alternate.

Yes..they can update their uniforms if they want. WHat I am saying is that a NFL will not have endless types of uniform choices like they do in college. OKla St coach said they had like 18 diff combos they could wear and they had the seniors decide before the season what to wear when.

I didnt say the NFL teams cannot change their uni's. Of course they can, but they cannot go into a season with more than 3 diff kinds and just wear whatever the hell they wants.

I was talking about your point that the league was going to make the uniforms more antiseptic and less ridiculous.

You are right about the uniform usage rules. No argument there. Just saying if Robert Kraft and the Patriots want a uniform that 9 year old kids will salivate over, with Nike's help... They can. Roger Goodell has no power over team branding, as crazy as that sounds. Somewhere he is plotting for this power. He also just fined James Harrison for this conversation we are having

Oh. OK. Yeah, i wasnt inferring that the NFL would do that. I was just stating that fans should expect NFL teams to be able to come out every week with a diff uniform like some in college could.

Okla state coach as I mentioned said they have like 18 diff variations and said that his seniors decide before the season because the last thing he wanted was a player asking in a meeting what unis they were wearing that day.

I dont think we will see the crazy uni combos like we see in college for quite a long time becuase they cannot really come up with the gimmicks for a game here, and a game there. The NFL teams are much more conservative and know any change is one they have to stick with for awhile.

Does a college uni help attract kids? Who knows. I know my stepsons "love" oregon and said they wanna play for them, yet havent probably watched more than 2 oregon games before so it does have an affect....so it would help colleges more than the NFL teams I think.

Don't forget one thing though. Merchandise sales. Kids are major users of team gear and new, fancy uniforms with a Nike check are sure to be the staple of every young kids bday/Xmas list.

I think you're probably right though, college teams are probably more worried about marketing and apparel sales.

Surprise. Dolphins unis looks gayer than aids.
  • raiderbuck
I doubt actual uni changes will happen that fast. And if they do, it won't be radical like you see in college. Is is more of a supplier change. Cleats, sideline/fan wear, and gloves will see the most change. Case in point:

    Vs.

Old and the NFL would be considered a circus with those hideous things.
