Tigers....Fielder

  • assumption
Some experts say, bad deal in the long term. True! However Detroit not thinking long term. Illitch at 80 wants to win now! Who will last longer...Puhols (sp) or Fielder??

Since Pujols is 32 and Fielder is 27, yet fat, I'd still go with Fielder.

Nothing against the guy, but I'm hoping Fielder doesn't even make it through the year :p

Fielder because, as BR mentioned, he's 5 years (at least) younger.

How can a vegan be that fat?

Pretty sure he's vegetarian, not vegan. Meaning the answer is most likely cheese.

    Easily...processed carbs.

a lot of "experts" are saying fielder, especially since he is younger, and he is only 2nd in a lot of batting stats behind.. you guessed it... pujols. Now Detroit is also the betting favorite for the World Series too. Interesting

One thing I saw about Fielder is that he's been extremely healthy through his career, only missing like 8 games overall so far. That's the thing I'd worry about. He's deceptively nimble and quick for being wider than he is tall, so I'd wonder how long that string of great health lasts. I think his youth gives him an edge on Pujois, but I can see him completely breaking down quickly when he does decline.

At least he was "fit" as a youth...

Fielder may be younger, but he is battling genetics. He does not have the natural athleticism of Pujols and A-Rod. This could be a very bad contract towards the end. That said, I doubt too many people will care if he helps deliver a few World Championships.

The only thing his long term deal has going for him is that his end will be at 36 years old, instead of 42/43 like the Arod/Pujols deals.

He may decline some, but a declined Prince at 36 will likely be more productive than a 41 year old Pujols/Arod towards the end of their deals.

Since the league cleaned up PEDS, we have seen no one really be super productive as a power hitting past about 38 years old. Arod and Pujols will still have 4 seasons after that age eating up $25+ million.

The Prince deal wasn't ideal, but I think barring injury he will be reasonably productive throughout compared to those other 2 deals where the guys had already started their decline when they signed their 10 year contracts.

By the time Fielder reaches that 10th year he may well be a bargain. The way deals /salarys are esculating who knows.
  • Hulk Smash
The Tigers are obviously willing to be stuck with Fielder's huge contract down the road for a chance to win a World Series now.

So what position will he play for the Tigers?
    First base is occupied.

Fielder will be 36 at the end of his deal, Pujols is probably 36 now.

Cabrera moves to third some games, he DH's some games, Fielder DH's some games.

Fielder to 1B. Cabrera to 3b. Delmon Young to DH. Ryan Raburn and Andy Dirks to LF. Brandon Inge........to another team.
