MulvaA lot of money for a pinch hitter.

I agree. -
wes_mantoothYeah, the Phillies must just be doing him a favor....he is done. Hell of a career though.
-
bogeyPlay another year for Charlie Manuel and then get him on staff.....Those two love each other.
-
vball10settoo bad, I would've liked to see him end his career in Cleveland...oh well

with Hafner there, there was no chance, but it would have been cool for sure.vball10set;958709 wrote:too bad, I would've liked to see him end his career in Cleveland...oh well -
Ironman92Not a bad deal. Good pinch hitting lefty with great power and a fan favorite type of guy and the best clubhouse guy ever.
-
Ironman92Only 110 short of the record.
-
HitsRusNot surprised he didn't stay with the Tribe...I just can't imagine why the Phillies would want him to take a roster spot. How many AB's do you think he can get in the NL? ...200 ? if he stays healthy. I guess they have money to burn.
-
justincredibleGood deal for both parties.

Much better pinch hitting option then Ross Gload. -
karen lotzIs Howard going to be ready by opening day?

He texted me on Thursday and he made it sound as if he might not make it back healthy until May 1st...his doctors say it not healing quite as quickly as expected. -
Tiger2003Last I saw was he is healing very well. He has a good shot at being back for opening day but at the latest it looks like mid May.
-
Azubuike24Dude tore his Achilles. He might be there opening day, but to expect him to be close to ready at all during the year is a lot. It's not like Thome can play 1B though...
-
HitsRusIt really doesn't make much sense for a National League team to sign him period. It's not that Thome kills pitching anymore, especially lefties, so it's easy to negate him by bringing in your matchup lefty. It's my understanding that it requires a lot of therapy just to keep him able to take his wings at the plate. Playing the field is probably out if your want to keep him healthy enough to take his swings. I mean it is the majors, not a church softball league....how well do you think he can play that position?
I expected an American League team to take a flyer on him where he could at least be DH every other game, and for the "draw" value he may bring at the gate. Do the Phils need THome to help sell out the stadium? -
Ironman92They are paying 1.2 million for the best clubhouse guy ever and 12-15 HR
There are 50 worse deals next year than this one. -
HitsRus^^^last year Jimmy hit 18 HRs in 350 AB's as a DH. Do you honestly see him getting much more than 200 AB's? He has got to be a defensive liability at 1B even if he can play. Yeah, he'll log some swings in interleague play ...if he can play everyday.
I can't argue with the the guy being a great guy in the clubhouse....I guess if you got a $ million to burn.... -
Ironman92Has Thome ever won a championship? He gave the Phillies some great production....may be a thank you and a deal all in one.
Ryan Howard is not exactly Mark Teixeira at first base. -
Y-Town Steelhound
You can't be serious...with Hafner there? It's 2011, not 2007. Hafner won't play 60 games next year as his body is as durable as a piece of string cheese. They definitely could've used Thome but the 1.25 million would've been breaking the bank for the Dolans.wes_mantooth;958780 wrote:with Hafner there, there was no chance, but it would have been cool for sure. -
I Wear Pants$3.50 is breaking the bank for the Dolans.
