CoCo Cordero done as a Red?

  Looks like they did decline the $12 million option on his contract. I'd guess they could try to negotiate a lower $$$, but odds are he's gone.

  If they don't resign him, I think they HAVE to go outside of the organization. Chapman should be given a chance to be a starter, and I don't like the idea of Ondrusek, Bray or Masset closing.

  Bruce makes too many little blunders.
  
  Votto is solid but kinda makes Jim Edmonds plays on all balls to his left....competition not great at 1B in the NL. He may squeak one out and then Chris Welsh will make me puke.
  
  Phillips should win....but I hate how the Reds scorekeeper takes care of him....but he's deserving regardless.

  This is a formality. There was no way his option was going to be picked up. Jocketty has said it before they are going to try and get Cordero back. Even worse, they are talking about a multi-year deal. 2 year/16M, or something along those lines. I think it's a mistake, given the number of arms the Reds have, but also the number of holes they have.
  
  Re-sign other key players, use the plethora of arms you have and work on finding them spots and use the left over money to fill holes. Cordero is experienced and a veteran, but in-terms of pure stuff, he's got nothing more than 4 or 5 other relievers on the 40-man roster. What they would be paying for is the closer experience. For a small market team to win, they need to take a risk and see if they can fill it internally.

  Imagine he will look around, but the reds will try to resign him. Since Massett fucked it all up because he coulda been the heir apparent.
  
  Ironman.....home scorekeepers take care of LOTS of players around the league, whether it be as a hitter and a fielder.

  Anyone know how Chapman has been doing? I think he was getting 3-4 starts in the fall league, and then I think he is to go to a winter league for a little bit.
  
  The organization really threw a year out the window with him. They screwed the pooch this year with Chapman. There is NO REASON why they couldnt have done with him like the Padres did with Ohioan Cory Luebke. Cory was in the BP, and then early on was moved to the rotation.
  
  As of Sept 21st, only Lincecum had more starts with giving up 3 hits or less in the game. Cory was tied for second with the most starts with 3 or less hits.

  Chapman was scratched from his most recent AFL start with shoulder stiffness. Not good news. Still wondering if he can handle starting. Interesting question...as we are debating who should CLOSE!
  
  Dump Coco's money, trade some prospect depth and swing a sign and trade for a starter and make Chapman the closer. Makes too much sense. But this is the Reds...

  I think it makes more sense to put Chapman in the rotation, a position he has always been in pretty much. The closer role will take care of itself. I would rather see Chapman as a starter, and pitching 150-200 innings than in the closers role. I think he can be the next randy johnson.
  
  If he falters big time, pretty easy to plop him back in the BP.
  
  
  As far as his shoulder stiffness. Could be anything. He didnt pitch many innings this year but you can assuredly bet he threw alot either in warming up, in side sessions, and has been doing so since ST.
  
  A great closer is a luxury. I dont think it is a sound move to take a guy who has struggled in the BP and make him the closer. As a starter he will throw more innings, get routine side sessions between starts, and he can work through some of his wildness a bit easier than he can as a reliever. I think a structured schedule will work wonders for him.

  I absolutely disagree with possibly paying Cordero 16M for 2 more years.
  
  So while I want Chapman to start, I don't want it to be the catalyst to the Reds wasting their "precious payroll flexibility" on a closer who could blow up at any moment.

  My bad, I took your last statement in the post above mine is that you want Chap as the closer.
  
  Agreed, I dont want Cordero for that much money. You can bet the reds will try to get him back at a more reasonable price.
  
  
  What should be done at the SS spot? Cozarts job unless he is stil injured or tanks horrendously. Keep Janish for his flexibility in the INF?
  He has to be a cheap insurance policy for SS and second.

  I know the organization has high hopes for Boxberger as the next closer, but hopefully we still re-sign Cordero for a more team friendly rate. I'm not ready to put trust into Masset, Chapman, Bray, or Boxberger.

  An error is an error. While the scorekeeper is taking care of one player he's affecting another. Just call it as it is.
