It was all on the line: The winner takes the division title and the home field for the entire postseason, the loser gets in as a wild card. And Smith, playing the last two quarters with what the Cowboy medical staff called a No. 1 separation of the right shoulder, put up the following numbers: 168 yards rushing on 32 carries, another 61 yards on 10 pass receptions. He handled the ball on 42 of Dallas's 70 plays, and he gained 229 of its 339 yards. And in the overtime, with his right arm dangling uselessly between plays, Smith got the call on nine of the Cowboys' 11 snaps and gained all but 11 of their 52 yards on the drive that positioned them for Eddie Murray's winning 41-yard field goal with just over four minutes left in the extra period. "Emmitt was hurting, he was done," right guard Kevin Gogan said afterward. "He sucked it up for his boys. I don't know how he did it."

"In the huddle he told me, "Run behind me and pick me up. I don't want to lay on the ground,' " left guard Nate Newton said, his eyes brimming with tears. "Man, was he ever hurting today."
Oh man, what a great story, yeah definitely top 5 after reading about that..wow!

Dont you know 1 game makes you a great RB? Demarco Murray should be top 5 after today

Post WWII I’d take Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Gayle Sayers and Bo Jackson all above Barry Sanders.

No one has even come close to Jim Brown's 5.2 career ypc. Until somebody does, he is #1.

If Jim Brown didn't retire early or had a 16 game schedule all his records would be untouchable.

Barry Sanders was 5.0 lol, id say thats pretty damn close
  • GOONx19
^ Not for a career's worth of carries. Jamaal Charles was only .02 yards per carry off Brown's single season record last year, though.
  • Hb31187
Yes it is for his career. Barry Sanders career YPC is 5.0
  • GOONx19
I know. I meant that a 0.2 yards per carry difference isn't very close for a career stat, in my opinion.
  • Hb31187
5.2 ypc vs 5.0 ypc isnt close? O.o
  • GOONx19
Let me explain my thinking. Over his career, Sanders had 703 more carries. If you gave Jim Brown 703 more carries, he would only need to average 4.2 ypc over those 703 in order to have the same career average as Sanders. That's what the 27th best ypc running back averages this year. In other words, he would have to be a 2011 Marshawn Lynch. So no, I don't think it is that close.

My only problem with Barry was that half his runs were for no gain or for a loss. The Lions never won with him, mainly because they were saddled with 3rd and long all the time.

I loved Walter Peyton. Pound for pound, he was the best. Bo Jackson was unreal too. But for me, the 2 best pure all purpose running backs were Jimmy and OJ.

YPC is important no doubt. But with that logic, Jimmy Brown was only the second best runner that played for the Browns. Look up Marion Motley...I think he was at 7.0 YPC.
  • Speedofsand
just wait...yesterday Tebow had over 8.0 ypc

by the end of his HoF career he will be the GOAT running QB

    ;)

Bo Jackson wasn't the greatest of all time but he was the most talented, no one before or since has had his combination of everything...hell he could've been a hall of famer in 2 different sports.

I'll throw a name into the mix that hasn't been mentioned (probably because he's still playing) and that's LaDainian Tomlinson. Dude was a dominant back in his prime.

That is a good point about Barry...he did seem to be an "all or nothing" kinda guy. I just wonder what he would have did with a decent oline.

Nothing said it more than in (I think) 1997 when he got to his 2000 yard season on a rush (2001 I think) and on the very next play he went for negative 4 I think. Got 2000 yards twice that year. 2 plays later he secured it with like a 20 something yard scamper.

BTW, he ended up with 2053 yards that season. He only had 53 yards the first 2 games of the year. He totaled 2000 yards that year in essentially a 14 game season.

Since the average carry per down is 3.6, 5.2 is 44.4 % over the average and 5.0 is 38.8% over the average for a 5.55% difference.

I could concede Brown, Payton and Sayers (although I do think Barry was the best) but I can't say Bo was better. Bo was talented and full of potential, but never got to that point due to injury. He can't even be mentioned in the same sentence with these guys as the greatest RB to play the game.

Jim Brown was a great back, all-time great, as is Barry Sanders. I think we split hairs when saying one is better than the other; however, Brown never faced defenses and schemes like Sanders (and the same can said about Sanders and today's RBs). The game evolves and gets tougher for every era. So to compare ypc and a (IMO) slight .2 difference is moot.

I was not talking career stats that Jackson had cut due to injury, I was talking who I'd want running for my team. Come to think of it, I'd rather have Eric Dickerson in his prime over Sanders in his prime.

Oh sorry, spelling bee champ ,for the mis- spelled "Marcus" I guess no one spells it "Marques" even though its pronounced the EXACT same way.
    Better tell Marques Johnson too.
  • Ironman92
I never won the spelling bee but my daughter was the 3-time undefeated champ.

C'mon sky how can someone that knows as much about sports not know it's "Marcus" Allen?

....and I wasn't the one who first brought it up.
