Pat Shurmer

I love that he's hands off and let's football people make the football decisions, while at the same time he isn't afraid to spend as much money as is needed to fix the (repeated) bad mistakes this organization makes.
    Exactly.

Exhibit A would be Dallas with Jerry Jones and Atlanta with Art Blank.

To be a great owner, you must hire the right guys and STFO of everything except money.

What about the Rooney's for the Steelers, Robert Kraft and the Patriots, They are football people that care about the organization and winning football games, not just about making themselves money.

But they stay out of the personnel decisions. That was the point. You don't want an owner who shoves his nose in the limelight.

Rooney and Kraft love their teams, but they know to stay out of the way.

I'm not getting the offense...and from the looks of it, neither is the team. I don't know if it is just a problem with them grasping the west coast offense, if they have the right personnel to run it, or if the coach is just in over his head. He seemed to have a bit of a Romeo Crennel 'deer in the headlights' look yesterday.

Anyone that hated the Holmgren hiring is retarded. Lerner made the right decision on that, and I will gladly take Holmgren and Heckert until they die. This has nothing to do with that, it has to do with the fact Shurmer looks like Fickell out there and has handled this team terribly. Dink and Dunk passes only work if you have the speed to break away. Start sending our fastest guys down field and stop being a pussy when it cosem to the play calling. Also, if hillis is healthy, GIVE HIM THE BALL.

Also, I have no idea why he wasn't starting Little to begin with.

No, but if this keeps up there's a good chance he will in 2012.

He's been a bright spot, gets open and advances the ball after the catch

I would have no problem with that.

Alex Mack was quoted in the paper this AM as saying the O-Line wasn't prepeared for the raiders' blitzes. What?
That's coaching. How do you not look at the films of the Titans game, and see those guys swarming all over McCoy and not think that the Raiders are to try to do the same thing? SMH.

The Shurmur hire was bizarre at best when you consider that his offenses in St. Louis the past 2 years were hardly anything worth writing home about. It's not like he was some whiz kid tearing up the NFL.

Then he compounded the problem by allowing a rookie head coach with only 2 years experience as an O-coordinator to call his own plays and be his own O-coordinator.

Has anyone with a resume that thin ever been given that type of responsibility before?

I want to believe in Holmgren, but how did he not see how that could potentially be a huge problem?

Well, the original premise of this thread is wrong because Hillis was hurt, not being held out.

That said, Shurmur needs to fire himself as OC and bring in someone to do that full time. It's obvious he can't handle both duties. He's made far too many rookie mistakes in the process. Focus on putting the best TEAM on the field, and pay attention to what's happening on the field instead of trying to figure out what the offense will be doing next time out.

Agree with this. He can't effectively handle BOTH duties.

agreed.....Shurmur seems to be in way over his head

One thing i do not agree with Holmgren about is letting Mangini coach last year when we all know that he wasnt in Holmgrens plans . If you know that , then by letting him stay around another year just set the team back......Of course hiring a coach is somewhat like evaluating the draft, if you make the wrong choices, whether it be drafting or hiring of a coach it could set you back years.......Shurmur doesnt want Mangini's players and the next coach will not want Shurmurs players

I'll reserve judgement on Shurmer at least this year. I think people forget he lost a lot of time due to the lockout and the team clearly is not fully clicking on the offense yet.

    This.

This team had a new QB (save the 8 games in '10, he got screwed by Mangini), a new offense, a new defense, a new head coach, new players and a lockout to deal with. It cracks me up that fans are already calling for Shurmur to be fired. Obviously Holmgren knows something we don't and, given the cirumstances this season, is probably evaluating Shurmur as much as he is the players. If it keeps-up, maybe Holmgren has a plan in place to become the next head coach, and keep Shurmur on as his OC.

Browns fans are the worst. This team is 2-3 and could just as easily be 3-2. Compared to what we've seen from this team since their return, 2-3 is a slight improvement. They're never satisfied with what we have. That's understandable with the product on the field this season, but again, given the cirumstances, what'd you really expect? 16-0? Anyone who doesn't see that this team is FINALLY heading in the right direction for the first time in over a decade, can jump ship and root for another team for all I care. They have a competent front office, which is a start, and, contrary to popular belief, success doesn't happen with the hiring of an inexperienced head coach, a new offense, a first year starter at QB, new players/lack of proper personnel, in just one year.

To be fair, however, some Browns fans wouldn't be satisfied with even an 8-8 record this season.

Get off your high horse. What do you want us to do? Hold hands while sitting by a camp fire and singing kumbaya?

The only teams we beat are teams that still have not won a game......and we struggled to do that!
  • wes_mantooth
My only disappointment with the front office was that they didn't get a wide receiver in the offseason. I wanted to see what McCoy could do with a playmaker. I think that McCoy is a backup at best, but I wanted to see him with a couple players to help him.

This team lacks talent, so I am ok with their record

this. i said this when we first hired shurmur and everybody told me to give dude a break. "look what he had to work with in st. louis." why doesn't gill haskell come down and call the plays? or even holmgren?

Agreed. Shurmur wants to call plays, I get it. He's said thats the most fun part about gameday. However his playcalling has been atrocious thus far this season. I still get heated when I think about that pathetic 4th and 1 with Armond Fucking Smith.
  • Al Bundy
I don't care about the record, but I would like to see improvement. I like some of our young guys on defense, but I know that we are missing a lot of parts there. I haven't seen any improvement on offense, and that is frustrating. Hopefully we see some improvement over the next 2.5 months.

lol holmgren has way more to do than to watch tape and develop a game plan. Calling plays isn't easy and requires a lot of work.

Yeah you're right, 5 games into his first season its time to can him. /sarcasm.
