Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns: Week 1

This game is a confidence booster for us. It is always good to start off the season with a win.

The OL has to get a lot better before they win any games this season.

At this point I don't see how you can consider them a favorite heading into Indy next week.

Shurmur is in way over his head right now.

As bad as we looked today...the Colts looked that much worse

The receivers are still bad, the right side of the line is still horrible, the linebackers are still horrible, the safeties can't cover anyone, Sheldon Brown should not be a cornerback, and the defensive line is (I'll be nice) a work in progress.

Throw in a quarterback that most people were/are expecting way too much from and a complete lack of discipline/abundance of penalties and you get a home loss to the Bengals.

I'll stick with my hypothesis that this team did just about jack shit to improve in the offseason except to sit back and hope that Colt McCoy emerges as a franchise QB. Unless he's going to play more like he did in the 2nd quarter today than he did in the other 3, I'd be shocked at anything better than 6-10.

That said, a 6-10 team should still beat the Bengals at home, so this loss is pretty inexcusable. A loss next week would be just as bad. Week 2 and already a must-win game.

McCoy can only do so much with what he's got. Did you watch the same game? McCoy didn't lose this game today.

He didn't do much to win the game either

Don't know about you...but I seen a shitload of passes that the receivers should have had today that they dropped.

He didn't play great, but this loss is nowhere near his fault. If the defense doesn't stay in the huddle, we aren't even having this conversation. And the right side of the OL got beat all day in pass protection. Not much he can do about any of that.
  • zach24oz
He did enough to win the game...all the Browns defense had to do was be set and ready instead of being in the huddle when the Bengals offense is snapping the ball and they had the chance to win. But that didnt happen mixed with the Line blocking terribly results in the L.

There were a lot of drops and the receivers aren't good enough to get any separation. I'm not sure if McCoy is the answer or not at QB. It is impossible to judge him based upon what is around him. Any QB would look terrible on this team right now.

McCoy got into the act as well. He dropped the ball right into the hands of Michael Johnson towards the end of the game. That was huge for us.

McCoy is solid, but I have my doubts that he will ever be anything more than a mid to low tier QB

The game was over by then.

Lot of things to work on...need to to a better job of trying to establish the running game. Hopefully can get a W against a bad Indy team next week...hopefully. This one sucks becuae the freaking had it and coughed it up!
You didn't even mention Cribbs being tackled by his own man on a punt return. If Little doesn't tackle him, I think Cribbs takes it back and we have a different outcome.

Way too much stupidity in this game and, yes, the Browns "let them hang around." Too many scoring opportunities blown. After that second quarter it was as if they thought they could coast and that halftime lead would hold up. Way too conservative with the 2 yard passes. I was having Daboll flashbacks.

Little didnt tackle him. We arent even talking about him breaking a touchdown if Little didnt lay out the punter. I hate when someone with the ball blames the blocker if they run into them. YOUR JOB IS TO READ THE BLOCKS

Good call. If the Bengals "suck this year," what does that say about Cleveland? (from one of the first few pages of this thread)

They still had good field position and should have capitalized...I thought they went away from running Hillis way too early and kept on trying to pass.

Here's a quote that summarizes the game pretty well:
Colt McCoy threw two TD passes for the Browns, who were disorganized for much of Shurmur's first game. Cleveland committed 11 penalties -- 10 in the first half -- and for some reason the Browns' defense wasn't ready for the key third-and-11 and Cincinnati made them pay.
    You guys out-Bungled us!

They had good field position the entire 2nd half and couldn't do anything.

Zero leadership in this organization. Shows on the field.

There was a ton of disorganization today, especially in the first quarter. I still have no idea why they didn't play the starters in the last preseason game to work on things. The Packers still felt that they had things to work on and played their starters in the last preseason game, but the Browns were so set that there was no reason to play the starters at all
  • BR1986FB
As far as the disorganization, any "organization" they had left with Mangini. He may have sucked as a coach but they WERE disciplined. Reverted back to their old ways (stupid penalties...A coach getting a penalty for knocking over a ref? REALLY?) as soon as Mangini left the building.

Being a Bengal fan for nearly 40 years has been up and down, well mostly down, but winning this game made me chuckle! Who Dey!
