Chris Johnson: What is he worth?

  • sleeper
It's pretty easy to say CJ is a top RB in this league and is heavily underpaid for his position. What would you pay him? He supposedly is asking for 39 million over the first 3 years of his contract, is he worth 13 million a year?
The Carolina Panthers recently gave DeAngelo Williams a five-year deal valued at $43 million with $21 million guaranteed. The Vikings' Adrian Peterson is in the final season of his original five-year contract, earning more than $10 million this season. Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams got a six-year deal worth $44 million with more than $20 million in bonuses in August 2008.
I believe those players are the 3 highest paid RB's in the league.

3/$39 seems more than reasonable for guaranteed money, don't think I'd go much further guaranteed.

Serviceable RB's are plentiful, no way I would pay any one RB that kind of money unless the team was making the Playoffs and contending consistently and neither of those teams are.
The last 10 Super Bowl Champions didn't have a dominate RB on their team.

Not 13 million a year. Less than 10 Million imo.

No more than than 20 million guaranteed over 3 years....In three years he will have half the explosion he does now. With a Vince Young at QB...he lasts five years...with a pocket passer he will be injury prone by the end of the third year.

I am not sure what he is worth, but I don't blame him a bit for wanting to get paid now considering he turns 26 in a month and has probably only 3 seasons left of elite level production.

Were he to play out his rookie deal, he would be a 28 year old back whose best days were behind him and getting paid would be tough.

Running back is unlike any other position in that you are essentially done by the time you are 29/30, so there is far more urgency to get paid everything you can early while you can because there is no next contract or longevity.

The Titans would love nothing more than to have him play out his rookie deal the next 2 years, give him 800 carries, and then put him out to pasture when he is beat down. If I am CJ, under no circumstances do I put a uniform on again unless I am getting paid significantly more than I am now.

Either way, the Larry Fitzgerald deal has made what was already a tough negotiation even worse. The Titans knew that deal was coming down the pike, and knew how it would effect CJ's demands. Why they didn't do more to proactively deal with the situation with him before hand is puzzling to me.

The thing about it is the Titans have pretty similar backups on their team that could do the same work he does. No need to pay that much for him when you can pay someone half of that and get similar, if not, the same results.

Along those lines, gone are the days of the every-single-down back. Not only that, but the fragility of the position, and there's no way if I'm the Titans I'm paying him the same type of money an elite QB or WR would get. Should he be among the highest paid RBs? Definitely. But more than that? Nope. And if I'm the Titans? I stick to my guns.

That's what I was getting at. A combo of Johnson and Ringer would be awesome. But the fact this dumb ghetto jackass thinks he is footballs gift to running backs is hindering that. You tell him we will pay you top running back money, if you don't like it then you don't play.

I dont think you could just plug another rb and get the same production you get outta CJ, I mean he is a pretty talented running back who is the center of that offense.

I've sided with CJ for the most part, but now to me he (or his agent) is just acting like a greedy dick. He's a running back, not a QB. I thought top RB money was deserved. Demanding more than that IMO is ridiculous.

I haven't tried to act tough. Refer to dynasty's signature. That is all.

We all know the NFL is morphing into a passing league. The new CBA has LESS contact practices, and less practices in pads. A coach was interviewed that even under the last rules players were asking for MORE practices and contact so the running game can get going.

Now they have even LESS....and there are huge fines if they break those rules.

With that said.......running games should decrease.

So...does that make him more valuable?
  • sportchampps
I'd pay him 39 for three years. He is all the titans have. He isn't asking for qb money. Matt cassel makes like 16 mil a season. Manning and brady are right around 20. If you don't pay him you might as well tell your fan base you don't care about winning. Also without Johnson you might as well consider haselbecks career over by week 5.
