Pirates and Braves go 19 innings... What a bad call.

Umpires always find a way to make it about them way more than it should happen. A tag is a tag whether he he swipes and the string of his glove touches the baggy part of his pants leg or if his drills him into the gound.

lol at the guy trying to run to first......coordinated

    sorry heretic

really, the ump blew this call so the focus could be on them?

really? i have watched it a few times looking for the catcher's glove to move or change direction when hitting his leg, it really doesnt. if you cant show the glove is touching the leg, how can you say he made the tag? remember how replay works right? had he called him safe and the braves wanted a review, i would say the same thing, there isnt enough evidence to go either way.

I was paying attention to the game on Yahoo last night and was bummed that a 7-hour game ended with the Pirates losing on a night when the Cards and Brewers won. Then I woke up today to find out the game ended on a blown call. That just fucking sucks ass. Can't blame everything on that call, as they were getting shut down by nobodies like that Martinez guy and Proctor, but if a game goes that long, I don't think it's too much to ask that the winner actually earns the win.

Whoa whoa whoa. No need to attack Martinez.

Well, I mean "nobody" for him in that I haven't heard of him before last night. Online, it said something like he was a recent call-up who'd been a starter in AAA, which explains why he could go six innings. Kinda like how Dan McCutchen was a starter in the Pirates organization until this year, when he was moved to relief.

That was probably the worst call I have seen in any sport. Ever. Damn.

Started the season as Atlanta's long relief man, then was sent down end of June because Atlanta's starters had been consistently getting into 6 or 7 innings and there Martinez wasn't getting any work at all. When they sent him down they used him as a starter to stretch him out in case they needed another starter. Worked out well for them last night.

I said the same thing last night right after it happened. The more I look at it, the more possible it becomes that Meals could have honestly thought the tag was missed. Why he didn't just slap the tag on him instead of sweeping like that I don't get. I still think he was out, but I can maybe say there is a .4% chance that Meals could have seen a missed tag.

Lugo's reaction tells the whole story...
  • Ironman92
The tag from 5 feet before the plate tells the story good enough for me.

I went to bed when this game was in the bottom of the 14th......recorded the 2:00 am SC to see the outcome and the announcer said Clint Hurdle was purple........funny

I actually think that's the case, as well. I don't think he was just like "ah, i'm tired..lets call this safe and go home"

He probably did think he missed the tag...but obviousy, he was wrong.

    Quotes from Lugo last night...
On the game-ending play at the plate
    “I know I’m safe.” [Smiles]
    Did he miss you?
“Yeah, I think so. He made the right call.” [Raises eyebrows]
What, your slide was so fast we couldn’t see you hit plate before the tag? [Sarcasm]
    “That’s what happened.” [Smiling]
You secretly snuck around him? [More sarcasm from reporter]
“I was trying to avoid the tag.”
    Surprised by the call?
“He made an appreciation call. Safe or out. That’s what they do.”
    An appreciation call?
“Yes. You can appreciate if I was safe or out. He thought I was safe.”
    What did you think?
    “I was safe.” [Smiles]
How many times were you tagged?
    “I was safe.”
    So you were never tagged?
    “I was safe.”

I don't know if I mentioned it on here or not, but Meals will be at third base tonight, right in front the Pirates bench. Might be the most awkward game for a 3rd base ump in history.

Hurdle might not make it past the line up exchange. I92 needs to throw up some ejection over unders for tonight as well.

Cha-Ching. Stand in there and take a hit. Leave no doubt.

Also I haven't seen a replay that shows conclusive evidence that the swipe ever touched the runner. Probably did but replay wouldn't help ya. In other words, keep cryin' Pi$$burgh. I love the sound.
