Reds @ Brewers: Game 4

  • mhs95_06
Reds outscore the Brewers in the series 22-21 but lose the series 3-1!

There is nothing wrong with the Reds situation that winning the 16 games remaining in July won't cure!

Only good news is. The 3 teams in front of us have tough months of July and august. We have no west coast trips. And our July and august could be a chance to beat teams we are supposed too.

Still think theres a good chance we are in it til the very end..mainly because of our weak division. But I'd rather they struggle the whole year then turn it on late leading into the playoffs then play consistently well the whole year then fizzle out at the end (aka last year).

Thankfully the season is so long, I still have hope.

Looking back at last year's All-Star leaders, only the Reds and Rangers led their divisions at the end, White Sox and Padres didn't make the playoffs. Only 5 of the 8 leaders and wild card teams at the break were in the playoffs. So this should be an interesting second half with 12 teams within 8 1/2 games of the 6 leaders. The Phillies and Giants were 4 games behind and the Twins 3 1/2 out, so there could be a lot of changes this second half, but teams like the Reds need to turn it around and play consistent baseball and get a hot streak going.

I still have faith. I just have lowered my expectations now.

The frustrating thing is, the pitching had been pretty damn good when the hitting was bad. The Reds actually hit the ball well this series, and the pitching let them down.

Dusty's decision to pitch Cordero because he was warmed up Saturday night even though the score was 8-3 when he entered proved to be stupid.

Dude pitched 30 pitches Friday and then 20-some more Saturday night AND he's struggling right now. That was a recipe for disaster yesterday.

Welcome to the story of the season. Some alarming stats...

Team ERA, 4.17, 14th of 16 in the National League.

    Carlos Fisher, 0-3
    Jose Arredondo, 1-3
    Francisco Cordero, 3-3
    Logan Ondrusek, 3-3
    Nick Masset, 1-3

Only Bill Bray (2-1) and Aroldis Chapman (2-0) have winning records out of the bullpen. However, it's a telling sign when the bullpen has 16 losses on the season of the 47 the team has lost. Say what you want about the overall starting pitching, and it's been shaky at best, but this team, if you had to narrow down the single biggest reason they are 2 under .500 at the ASB is the fact that more often than not, the relief pitching hasn't been able to sustain leads in crunch time and the team hasn't been able to win those nail-biters they were dominating last year.

Outside of Homer Bailey, 3-4, with a 4.13 ERA, every Reds' starter who has started more than 4 games has a winning record...again, wins and losses aren't always an indicator of performance, but when looking at the big picture, it can pinpoint some problems.

Pitching is pretty consistent. They usually do a little worse than necessary to win, regardless of how many runs the offense scores! If the game isn't lost by the time the closer comes in, it will be!
