  Pujols' shoulder is not as fucked up as Hafners. Hafner has had multiple shoulder injuries/surgeries over the years. His shoulder really is glass.

  His shoulder injury does not allow him to throw the ball. Therefore he can't play defense.

  Back in the day, when pitchers could actually hit the ball, it was obviously not a problem to have them bat and it made sense.
  I don't find it any more "pure" of a game in the NL TODAY because they have to work around an automatic out since pitchers have become specialists and can't hit shit.

  He split time at first....but he was never very good on defense.

  But he did play 1st until he suffered the elbow and shoulder injury. The fact is, I wouldn't risk it just for a regular season series.

  Let's have designated runners, too. We can line up former college sprinters next to home plate, set to take off with the crack of the bat. For that matter, why make the great hitters play defense at all - lets's follow the AL logic and have separate rosters for hitters and fielders!

  Hell, with this being the new Year of the Pitcher, it seems like 95 percent of position players are batting under .250. In today's Pittsburgh-Washington game, the Nats had one guy batting over .250 in their starting line-up and he was at .260. Morse and Nix also are above that (Morse at about .300 and Nix at .275 or so), but they were just pinch-hitting.
  
  And with Pittsburgh, McCutchen (.295) and Presley (about 20-30 at bats) were the only guys with decent averages. Walker and Jones were both right around .250 and the rest were in the low .200s.

  If they would do the situation where they blow up the divisions, there may be MORE interleague play as part of going back to a balanced schedule. (fact is it's not going to go anywhere as long as it continues to draw at the gate). There would basically be 1 series against everyone, interspersed throughout the year.
