Shaq retires - does this mean Wilt's vertical was 50 inches or not?

I'm pretty sure the story of that vertical actually came from Wilt himself. He claimed to having a better vertical than Jordan('s 48 inches) in his prime. -

Those guys are bullshitters, I seriously doubt Jordan had a 48 inch vert, HIGHLY unlikely -
sleeperLOL @ 50 inch vertical.

I think MJ's vert of around 47-48 has been document by the NBA. I just can't find it anywhere. -

Sure thing, superfan...

It could be but it's unlikely to me, people don't realize how high that is. -
wildcats20FWIW...
Jonny Flynn recorded a 40 inch vert at the draft combine in 2009.
And Kenny Gregory had a 45.5 inch vert.
48-50 isn't really THAT out of the question.... -
Hb31187For some people a vert that high isnt out fo the question. I would bet my life that Wilt never was recorded at a 50 though

Oh absolutely agree. -

It's certainly not out of the question, but a 40 inch vertical is incredible, 48-50 is almost inhuman like. I'm sure there have been guys who have had it though. I remember reading in slam a long time ago that there was a guy who went to the same academy as KG, although a few years after, who had an over 50 supposedly, doesn't seem humanly possible.wildcats20;789087 wrote:FWIW...

I'll bet your life too! -
Laley23A 50 inch vertical, means the 7 foot Wilt could have damn near touched the top of the backboard (13 feet) with his head (he would be like 10 inches short). From a standstill. No. Fucking. Way.

Yeah, I don't believe for a minute that Wilt's vertical was 50 inches.
And the verticals listed are the "max vert" which is what most people use when talking about verticals. -
DeyDurkie5I'm surprised skyhook hasn't quoted a bible verse to back his argument up...smh at a 50 inch vertical

Ironman92If Wilt was was 7 foot and he had a 50 inch vert that would put his head at 11 ft 2 inches....not anywhere near 13 feet...about the top of the square....which ain't happening....but not 13 feet

Sooo....48=50? -
wildcats20I'm not trying to be a dick, but when you throw a number out like 50 inches, Wikipedia isn't exactly the greatest source...

I'm still not buying 48 inches. Just look at the video of him playing. He has some nice dunks in it but nothing near what a 7 footer with a supposed 48 inch vertical would throw down.
