Reds at Braves, game 1

  • mhs95_06
After a swinging bunt single by Rolen to lead off the 2nd, Lewis' drives an RBI double to LCF, but Reds fail to add on by getting Lewis in. Then they fail to score Leake when he leads off the 3rd with a double. Leake with 3 scoreless innings so far with 45 pitches with good help from his defense with a double play to cover his lateness covering 1st base and a good play by Lewis and Phillips catching Prado trying to stretch a double.

4th will be key for Leake with the first two up being Jones and McCann, who Leake pitched around after the big 1st inning double play, and walked them both.

Reds have to make them pay for the blown inning ending double play ball on the throw into CF by Hanson.
  • mhs95_06
Good strategy by Dusty and good execution of the suicide squeeze by Janish with the added benefit of getting Ramon to scoring position, where he dies as Leake can't hit the breaking balls like he hit the "get ahead" fastball the first time around. 2-0 Reds going to the key bottom of the 4th.

Chipper should have been out on strikes but apparently has the smallest strike zone ever.

Double plays are wonderful things - still 2-0 Reds!
  • mhs95_06
And Hanson is out of the game, in favor of a lefty, with 2 on and 2 out in the 5th with 98 pitches and Bruce coming to bat!
  • mhs95_06
And Bruce's squibber off the pitcher's glove scores the 3rd run making it 3-0 going to the bottom of the 5th.

Take runs any way we can get them!!

The braves are making some high school level mistakes, and for that we thank you!!

Rare error charged to the first baseman on a ground ball to SS that the throw bounced. Gonzales didn't deserve the error with his great play that had the ball there in plenty of time on the hop from deep in the hole. With Ramon out by so far if the play is made they could hardly give him a hit, so I guess by default they give the error to Freeman, but that usually doesn't happen. But the Reds can't get a run with even two errors in the inning, both failing to get an out, with the 2nd one being another bad throw to 2nd on a bunt.

    No it's not.

Third time Hinske goes to LF, and finally gets a hit on the worst contact of the 3. Gomes ought to be taking note of going to the opposite field!

That's just it - trying to go the other way keeps you from pulling off the ball and helps make the contact especially on breaking balls.

But he's swinging at sliders 3 feet outside.
