Alcohol problem in MLB?
-
DeyDurkie5Thought this was a good article and shed some light on a very ignorant concept...Get a DUI, play baseball the next night. Do you guys feel there is an alcohol problem in MLB? I definitely see where this writer is coming from and for them not to get a cab ride with the millions they are making is retarded. Not to mention these guys were playing the next night.

karen lotzI thought MLB had just recently set up some program in every MLB city where any player could call a number and someone would come pick them up and drive them home and it would be kept private, ie not a cab service per se. Could have been another sport but thought I had seen that somewhere.
-
karen lotzBut yeah, its definitely stupid for these guys to not pay for a cab or to have someone on their payroll to drive them around. Too much to lose, one would think.
-
ernest_t_bassI think these drunks have a baseball problem!
-
HitsRusA social drinker can get a DUI, so from a drug/alcohol perspective, it doesn't bother me. From a public relations standpoint, I can/could see why MLB should crack down on these guys. Really, guys...just call a cab or someone to drive you home.

royal_kAlcohol has been a part of ML baseball forever. I believe it's still in some clubhouses. And just because a player gets a DUI, doesn't make him an alcoholic. But I agree, call a driver.

If you have a high paying job, and you are getting DUI's, that is an alcohol problem. It may not mean you're an alcoholic, but it's definitely a problem. -

The last part of your sentence is correct. It's a problem...not necessarily an alcohol problem. Anyone can get a DUI. It has nothing to do with having a high paying job. The only difference is having more means to get home safely. And if you have money or are a pro athlete, you should use them.SportsAndLady;766110 wrote:If you have a high paying job, and you are getting DUI's, that is an alcohol problem. thavoiceI know many people who have got a DUI and went to work the next day.....
Money, youth, free time......and they probably dont have to get up too terribly early if they have a night game that next day...yeah...i would say a good number of MLB drink, but a good deal of Americans will belly up to a bar each and every single night for a few hours as well. MLB just have the means and opportunites to do it more often -
HereticThe problem really is in the "who gives a fuck" attitude that currently exists in MLB. I've read that they're working to set up a league-mandated punishment system for DUIs, but there currently is nothing. Look at Miggy Cabrera. Got his fourth or fifth one this spring, had a complete meltdown where he was yelling at the cops to shoot him and all you got out of Detroit was this, "We're just going to work with him and get him emotionally ready to play ball by the beginning of the season!" sort of response. And, hey, he's leading them in average, homers and RBIs, so everything's wonderful...until his next drunken meltdown.

He has 1, lol. It is still a problem, and definitely with Miggy. But he does NOT have 4 or 5 DUIs. -

My bad. I remembered a previous alcohol-fueled altercation and thought it was a DUI, but it was a home domestic violence situation. And he's only had two alcohol-related arrests and not 4-5. -
