Cleveland OF Shin-Soo Choo arrested for DUI...

Sounds like he just had a bit more than he should have and he's paying the consequence.

Heard today that he's already pleaded guilty and paid his own bail.

I'd never make "light" of something as serious as a DUI but, unfortunately, this seems to be the "norm" rather than the "exception" these days. He's the SIXTH MLB player to get one this year (two were Indians). Dumbasses need to call a friggin cab or get a limo/driver for the night.

OMG! adults drinking too much. Like this is something new.

Back in the day, 6 YANKEES used to be over the limit a single nite.

What HAS changed is that now we have legislated a lower BAC limit, cops throw the book at you, and the media covers it like sharks with blood in the water. The old limit I believe was .15 which was nearly twice the limit as it is now.

Can't believe people actually think this isn't that bad after what happened with Stallworth.

I'm assuming you weren't referring to me because I DO think it's bad. It's just a shame that, as I said, it's become the "norm" rather than the "exception."

No, definitely not you. I totally agree with your point. Until they come down hard on guys and start taking a significant amount of their paycheck it will continue unfortunately.

The current limit does seem a bit low, but you kill enough ppl with being over the limit by drunk driving people take notice. Also alcohol effects people differently, .08 is different for me vs say someone smaller like ishelp. Have to make a cut off somewhere. BTW .15 is ridiculously high, I'm glad they dropped it.

Stallworth's killing wasn't his fault, which is why he only went to jail for 30 days. It was the freakin idiot who ran in front of him's fault.

Stallworthless was still drunk and high. POS shouldnt have been driving regardless.

That BAC is awfully high for someone who goes out drinking casually.

After covering courts for a number of years, including cases like this, it was almost always the folks who blew better than a .20 who had some kind of chronic alcohol problem.

I sincerely hope that's not the case here, but I find it amazing he could drive at all. Most people would have been passed out.
  • grodt
What surprised me was that not only was he able to walk and drive, the cop reportedly didn't smell alcohol on him the first time he pulled over to ask for directions.

Ive been able to drive and walk and function at over .2

Im not going to say Im proud of it, but I have certainly driven drunk. Though probably not at that level, I cant say I am sure.

But I have definitely been over .2 and have been fully functional the rest of the night (albeit in a very intoxicated state).

I'm in the same boat. I have a high tolerance. Thing is, if I take that chance and it doesn't work out (either because I fuck up or some cop profile-stops me and I obviously fail testing), it's bad news. And regardless of your tolerance, .021 is of the level where reactions definitely aren't the same. This isn't something like Hits' little "OMG the limit is so low and guys used to be drunk 50 years ago" argument. That's 2.5 times the current limit and 2.1 times more than the previous .010 (may have been .015 earlier, but it went from .010 to .008 with its last change). You had an Angels pitcher die last year in an accident that resulted from a drunk driver (and I thought I read the pitcher was legally drunk too, but I might be wrong). Nothing other than an arrest happened to Choo, but if something had, his reputation/career/life might be ruined.

I'm not going to condemn him because I've done similar things, but in his pro athlete position with his pro athlete money, there is no excuse for him not getting transportation.

And let's face it, dude is off to a slower-than-expected start this year. If he's able to reach .021 and be at least semi-competent (according to grodt), maybe he ought to cut off the likely habitual drinking (which can be assumed by writerbuckeye's post about how court cases over .02 tended to involve chronic alcohol abusers) and focus on earning the money he's getting for doing his job.
  • royal_k
I wasn't condoning what he did. I agree with everything you say. I've been around for a while and done some things I shouldn't have, including getting behind the wheel. But that's in the past. And Choo is a very high profile person that a lot of kids look up to. He should have had a driver, plain and simple.
  • Laley23
No doubt what Choo did is retarded. All I was saying is, just because he was at .21 doesnt mean he is a chronic alcohol user etc. Ive been there many times, and I am not an alcoholic, that was my only point.

The first step in figuring out your problem, is admitting you have one! :)
  • HitsRus
Well I'm not condoning his actions either...it was stupid to get into a car epecially when he makes more than enough money to pay for a cab. In this day and age you just can't do that. I'm not going to condemn him either, or say that he necessarily has an alcohol problem.

If your tolerances are the same, size has nothing to do with how .08 effects you. It will just take the larger person more drinks to get to the limit.

How about implement a salary cap structure before worrying about DUI's?

I read that. Miggy Cabrera is currently on his phone screaming at a union rep to stop this from happening NO MATTER WHAT because he'll be out of baseball in roughly 2.5 weeks if baseball cracks down on drunk driving.
