You Know What??? Jamie Moyer isn't a very good analyst

  • kayo
I'm not a huge critic of the sports media, but this guy is painful to watch. He starts every other sentence off with 'You know what?' and simply looks uncomfortable while spewing baseball cliches the whole time. He reminds me of the Roy Smalley experiment ESPN tried quite a few years back.

Oh yeah, this Wendi Nix chick isn't very good, either.
  • karen lotz
Yeah he is incredibly awkward but it is his first time doing this and there has to be some nerves involved. He will get better as he gets more comfortable.

On the whole, Baseball Tonight has gone downhill ever since Harold Reynolds was let go. There has been constant turnover. I used to watch it every night but now I only watch if I didn't get the chance to watch a Braves game. It's too bad because the show really was good back in the day.

I dont watch Baseball Tonight unless MLB Network has a game. MLB Tonight (on MLB Network) is SOOOOOOOO much better.
  • royal_k
karen said it all...Harold Reynolds was the shit!

I wish I had MLB Network, Baseball Tonight just keeps getting worse.

I like the crew best when Kruk, Olney, and Kurkjian are on the show.

Larkin, Boone, and generally every "new" guy they have are very very bad.

The soft throwing lefty is in his first year of broadcasting. You know what? ....he'll probably get better. The guy definitely has the background to be a good color guy, lasting 24 seasons in the majors, compiling 267 wins.

Jamie Moyer was a gamer on the field. You know what? He'll probably be one in the booth, too. Rookies! Give him a chance

Must be the OP's first time watching ESPN in a long time. There are plenty of people that deserve criticism.

As for baseball tonight, it used to be my favorite and most respectable ESPN show. Nothing could beat that show when Harold Reynolds and Peter Gammons were together. The show was even solid before Steve Phillips decided to bang the ugliest chick he could find working for ESPN.

I actually have the MLB network, but hardly tune in to it. Is Peter Gammons part of their MLB tonight show?
  • karen lotz
I don't think Gammons is on MLB network. He has had some health issues recently.

    No but Harold Reynolds is.

Oh, I thought Gammons left ESPN to work for the MLB Network. I know he was working there last year. Maybe as lotz pointed out, his health is an issue.
  • karen lotz
I'm pretty sure he had a stroke two years ago and then returned to ESPN for a bit after he recovered. I haven't seen him anywhere recently.

MLB Tonight and Quick Pitch on the MLB Network >>>>>>>>>> BBTN.

He's mostly doing writing/video pieces for mlb.com and just some pieces they air during the MLBN shows, I believe.

Has anybody noticed that they refuse to zoom in on her? That goes as far back as her days on college football live. I'm not sure for the reasoning either. She appears to be pretty hot. But whenever she speaks on camera they zoom out and you have to squint to see her.

He definitely isn't with ESPN anymore, as evidenced by their baseball coverage. They are throwing so much crap at the wall hoping that it will stick. You notice how many guys they have gone through recently? ts1227 is correct, he is still with MLB.com/MLB Network, but I think his role is decreasing for health reasons.

I think Boone and Larkin do a pretty good job. The only reason I started the thread on Moyer was because I could not believe how often he said "You know what?". There has got to be a producer there that notices this as well, but then again, maybe not, as Mark Schlereth does this all the time as well. Maybe no one else notices, but it's a pet peeve of mine. Just one time I'd love to hear another host say 'NO! WHAT?'.

I still enjoy Baseball Tonight - especially with the Tribe performing well - but it just seems very unfocused for some reason with this 'West Coast Swing' they put in there. In between commercials they'll occasionally cut back to the set and you can catch some banter between the hosts. You would think they would know this but last night Nix was seen/heard telling the other two what to except when they came back on - something like 'OK, I'm going to ask if you are surprised by the Mets today and you're both going to say 'no''. Something seems out of kilter.

Lol, of course they know. Networks started doing this to get people to stay through the commercials, and for some reason it worked... People actually thought the show was back on and then tune out and not change the channel for the second batch of commercials. I think it started around 7 or 8 years ago with Comedy Central (Daily Show or Colbert Report).

As for Nix telling them...yeah, everything is scripted. The graphics and tape/replay has to line up to what the guys are going to say, and as skilled as the behind the scenes guys are at ESPN, no one can be THAT quick to make it all on the fly:D
  • kayo
^^^ Yeah, that's sort of my point. Assuming they know the cameras will be live, why show them rehearsing the scripted parts when you would think they wouldn't want that shown. A couple nights ago they had Boone and Larkin sort of goofing around talking about Boone's scarf - that made more sense than the deal with Nix, Perez, and Moyer.

Also, it fucks with DVR's in terms of the commercials, as if you try to breeze through the commercials it picks that up and stops fast forwarding.

Watching it now. Wendy Nix and Boone are terrible. This West Coast swing thing is pointless.

The show has really went south. The difference between what it is now and where it used to be is night and day.

They need to get Kruk and Kurkjian in the studio full time

This isn't about baseball, but has anybody else noticed how Stephen A Smith has found his way back on ESPN a few times speaking as a "guest" journalist. ESPN further proving why they are a joke.
  • karen lotz
He is also back hosting his own sports talk show on ESPN Radio in LA I think.

SMH, seriously? How many shows (tv and radio), does he need to be fired from for people to get it?
  • karen lotz
Haha yeah I'm serious. He has a show on ESPN radio in New York as well.
  • Wildcat24
I've noticed him writing for ESPN.com again as well. He has to have some pictures he's using to blackmail an ESPN higher up or something, because he will not go away. At least it's an excuse to revisit this video:
