Has there been many gambling issues in the NFL?
-
SportsAndLadyThe MLB has the Pete Rose and Black Sox scandals.
I have a powerpoint on illegal gambling in the NFL...so far I only have Paul Hartung.
Anyone have anything else on the NFL? -
karen lotzI'd look in to Paul Hornung.

Paul Hornung and Alex Karras were suspended for a season in the early 60's. Art Schlichter had all kind of gambling issues in the 80's while in the NFL. -
SportsAndLadyYeah I've got the Hornung and Karras case...I just need a few examples and can't find anything juicy like the Pete Rose thing, my slides are going to be boring haha i'll look at Schlichter too

karen lotzThe Schlichter case is pretty juicy. Spent time in prison because he stole money to feed his addiction. He estimated he stole $1.5 million and he was also recently accused of stealing another million from a 60 year old woman in Columbus within the past couple of weeks.

september63WR Kenny McKinley from the Denver Broncos recently committed suicide and had gambling issues. He owed ppl over 40K but Im not sure it was sports related.

thavoiceYou looking for guys who gambled on games they played in, or coached, like Pete Rose or just gambling problems in general?
Much, much harder for one player to throw, or point shave, in a football game.
When ODonnel threw away SB XXX, pun intended, I know I speculated that....until I found out that the receivers didnt run the right hot route and that is why it looked so bad. -
karen lotzMight be more difficult, but its not impossible. I think the University of Toledo had a running back and maybe even another teammate (might have been him and a basketball player) found guilty of point shaving a few years ago.
Edit: 6 total football and basketball players were involved.

I know the OP was dealing with the NFL, but maybe that could somehow be used? -
NateYep, UT would be a good one. Scooter McDougle was the main culprit. When I went to UT, there was a lot of chatter going around the Bruce Gradkowski was involved in throwing a game.

For your first question, both really. I have Schlichter in my presentation who had problems outside of the game with gambling; and I have the two guys from '63 who gambled on actual games. I'm not sure if there has been any instances since where someone was caught gambling on their own game or any other NFL games for that matter. But maybe that's just wrong and I'm a bad researcher haha -
