Edinson Volquez - Reds Opening Day Starter
-
justincredibleQue?
-
thavoiceThis a prediction or official?
Arroyo said he would do it but rather not. He had his best year I think ever, and in the last 5 or so years he has pitched in the top 5 of innings and one of few with 15 wins the last few years. Cannot go wrong with him. Does not matter really who throws. I could see Volquez being toooo amped for the game. -
justincredibleOfficial per Mark Sheldon and John Fay on twitter.
-
NateI don't mind it.
-
justincredibleHe's the best pitcher the Reds have when he's at the top of his game. He doesn't seem to be at the top of his game enough, though.
-
gerb131Really not a surprise, thought it might be Massett.

lolwut?
I thought it was a lock between Bronson and Johnny. -
gerb131I was kidding. Yea I figured Johnny but Edinson is the key/spark to the staff this year imo.
-
wildcats20I'm OK with it.
I just hope he doesn't suck. -
SportsAndLadyBronson is great when he's that #2 or #3 guy in the rotation, lets keep him that way.
Remember, Volquez is hitting that period in time where you're supposed to be "even better than before" after Tommy John. I think hes going to have a monster season. -

Totally agree about Bronson.Bronson is great when he's that #2 or #3 guy in the rotation, lets keep him that way.

And let's hope Edinson hits that stretch. -
jordo212000I dont have a problem with it. He pitches opening day, then after that, so what?
-
justincredibleI know Bronson isn't the ace, I figured he'd get the nod on seniority.
-
thavoiceI bet since BA really does not want to, but would, has something to do with it. He has been one of the most consistant pitchers in MLB in recent years.
-
CinciX12I'd much rather have Arroyo out there. But fair enough, I can live with this decision. Hopefully Volquez has a good spring and will be ready.
-
Laley23Edinson is going to be the Ace of the staff, or at least is projected to be. Might as well start treating him as one...
-
Azubuike24Arroyo basically said he isn't comfortable being the opening day starter. I'm fine with this decision.

Right. Arroyo didn't want to be the OD starter, which is fine. I assumed based on last seasons results it would've been Cueto. Or they would've announced it when they've actually played a ST game to see who is pitching well. -
september63Dusty Baker made this comment, "I just wanted Bronson starting between Johnny and Edinson. I didnt want them having battles over the radar gun."
-
Azubuike24Remember, Volquez was also the choice to start the first playoff game and the Reds had clinched for over a week before the series started. They could have lined it up anyway they wanted but Volquez still got the nod.

Probably so in a series when a team faces all three......so they cannot get "used" to the same type of pitcher I imagine. -
september63I dont believe Dusty has had Cueto and Volquez starting back to back for awhile, has he ever? See post #19.
-
thavoiceyeah..i know...that is why I said that....was gonna quote your post but I was too lazy I guess.
-
daveI wish they would just come out and say BA doesn't want to pitch opening day. The BS about Volquez and Cueto not being back to back is garbage. What is he going to do when Homer and either Volquez or Cueto are back to back?
I'm expecting the opening day losing streak to continue, this will be EV's first time throwing in cold weather in a couple years. Hopefully it's a warm day but probably not. They are making a big deal about opening night too so maybe they think this is the best chance to win 1 of the first 2. -
thavoiceThat is no secret...BA has said that for two years now.
I can see what they mean a bit about EV and Cueto...both are very similiar pitchers. Baseball is a game of over analyzing everything so I could see a managers reasoning....as not give a same team almost the same pitcher two days in a row.
Just read that Wainright from the Cardinals may be out for the season...............
