Question about Carmelo Anthony and All-Star team(s)

My boss and I had this discussion back when the Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets rumors were hot but I never got an answer to the question him and I thought about.

Say that Anthony is traded to the Nets or New York Knicks, how would his All-Star status work? Would he be moved to the Eastern Conference, as a reserve? I'm guessing when he was voted as a starter in the West for the Denver Nuggets, a lot of people from Denver and Colorado voted for him - not New Jersey and New York.

What about if he ends up in Los Angeles before the break? The same point about who voted for him goes here too, but I'm guessing he'd get the start, but in a Lakers uniform.

I'm not great on my NBA All-Star history, but has anything like this ever come up? All-Star starters aren't typically in trade talks heading up to the All-Star game.

Of course, this could all be a moot point if he isn't traded in the next 10 days.

An amendum to this, is if a starter, as discussed above, or even a reserve was traded from conference to conference. That would give one conference two more players than the other conference. Would the conference that lost the player add two additional players to even it out?

He'll wear an Eastern Conference Jersey, Western Conference Shorts and will guard himself the entire game on both ends of the floor. My guess is he might even win the MVP.

All joking aside, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't make the Eastern Conference All-Star team unless added on by the coaching staff. Once a guy is dealt, he would officially be "starting over" in the new conference I'd think in-terms of All Star status.

Just found this article on ESPN from a few years ago about the Jason Kidd trade...
If Jason Kidd gets traded to Dallas -- or any team in the West -- before the All-Star Game, it'll be certifiably historic.

That's because the NBA will have an unprecedented decision to make.

League officials say that a player voted in by the fans as an All-Star starter has never been traded to the other conference before the midseason classic was actually played. Which is also why the league is not prepared to say exactly what will happen if it has to deal with that scenario. It won't make a decision until it has to.

But the safe assumption, I'm told, is that Kidd would definitely still play in the game in those circumstances even if it meant allowing the West to carry a 13-man roster. You can't punish a player who's voted in as a starter by the fans.

The brain-teaser part for Commissioner Stern would be whether to make Kidd a starter in the West since his vote total (1,246,386) is higher than the total amassed (1,203,152) by Denver's Allen Iverson. In the East, longstanding rules in place dictate that Stern would pick the player that takes Kidd's roster spot and East coach Doc Rivers would have the right to pick the starter who replaces Kidd ... but then someone would have to decide whether the East should get a 13th man as well.

Also found this on this specific case, from 2 weeks ago...

    http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/28/carmelo-trade-could-give-the-west-another-all-star-spot/
If the forward were to be traded before the Feb. 20 All-Star Game in Los Angeles from the Denver Nuggets of the Western Conference to a team in the Eastern Conference, he instead would be placed on the East roster for the game. If all five East starters are healthy and ready to go, it would mean Anthony coming off the bench.

It also could mean the East having 13 players on its roster if Anthony were to be traded to the East after the reserves are announced next Thursday and all players are healthy and ready to play. The West roster could be down to 11 players but could be restored to 12 with a replacement named for Anthony.

    And this lol http://nba.fanhouse.com/2011/01/27/trade-to-eastern-conference-could-cost-carmelo-anthony-all-star/

Says the same thing as above, but throws this in at the end...
An NBA official confirmed the scenarios with FanHouse when information was requested on how any player in the exact situation as Anthony would be handled by the league.
