Why Gruden?????????

  • THE4RINGZ
First of all this IS NOT an anti-browns thread in any way whatsoever. I am questioning why so many fans want Gruden as their coach. Looking for some intelligent conversation based on these facts:

    1. Gruden won a super bowl as a head coach, this is true. He won using the team Dungy put together and stepped in to win, beating the team he had coached just the prior season.

    2. He works well with young quarterbacks? How old was Brad Johnson the year he won the super bowl? Remember the young quarterbacks on the bench during the game.

    3. He is a quarterback guru? We see him breaking down film with young quarterbacks on ESPN. Because that is what he is being paid to do. Does he break down film any better than any other NFL head coach? We don't know because other coaches don't break down film on television.

In light of these facts, is Gruden still your #1 choice for head coach?

I dont know much about John Grudens career.

Couldnt you say that Callahan went to the SB with Grudens players?
Didnt het get the Raiders to two AFC title games? I think he lost to the Ravens (who later won the SB) and the Pats in the "tuck game"? Its not like this guy only had a decent career in TB, he did a pretty solid job turning the Raiders around while he was there

    valid points.

I've always thought Gruden was overrated as a coach. I think most people liked him as because of that stupid scowl he made during the game and his resemblance to the doll, hence the nickname "Chuckie".
  • gorocks99
He uses the phrase "this guy" or "that guy" at least 10 times during every broadcast. That has to count for something.

Gruden is a good coach that is why they want him. People think he works good with Qbs because he helped coach Farve in Green Bay, Gannon in Oakland, Young in SF. Gruden did what Dungy could not with his players (win a super bowl). A coach doesnt pick the players a gm does. I'm not sure he worls well with young bs because he at times has a very short leash with qbs but when he finds one he trusts they usually do great things together.

You mean per series? We have a drinking game. Chuckie got us 5 times in one replay. Bastard!

Gruden has accomplished more in his tenure than all the coaches the Browns have had since their return put together. THAT is why Browns fans want him.

Not to mention he has the best resume of coaches who are available/appear to be available (ie not Cowher or Dungy)

#1. He's an Ohio guy. Born and raised in Sandusky. He knows the history of the Browns and what the team means to it's fanbase, not to mention the rivalry of the team to the east.

#2. He's a very good friend of Mike Holmgren. Meaning they would get along and have a good working relationship. He is also a WCO guy. This is a plus, when it comes to having the same offensive philosophy.

#3. He rebuilt the Raiders to a contending team, that went to the Super Bowl the year after he left.

#4. I love his intesity. (scowl)

    *edit

#5. He won a Super Bowl

Brian Billick is an interesting name that was brought up today...his resume is pretty damn good.

How do you think Browns fans would feel about a Raven coaching them?

Not fond of this guy at all.

Yes it is, didn't know he was looking to get back into coaching. He seems to have turned down jobs the last few years....now maybe he was never offered, but his name has been up a few yrs running now.
  • THE4RINGZ
I like Billick as a coach. Tough, hard nosed, knows the game.

But again this is not a browns specific thread.

Who knows if he is...it was just a name that Reghi(WKNR) threw out there. It was one of the two that he wanted.
  • killer_ewok
Billick was a pretty good coach but he hitched his wagon to Kyle Boller. Kyle Boller.

Marty Mornhinweg makes Jon Gruden look like the love child of Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll if they did some weird man-fuck threesome that produced offspring. THAT is why Browns fans want Gruden.
  • ytownfootball
Exactly. May as well just shoot ourselves in the fucking head and be done with it forever if they bring in Marty fucking Mornhinweg.

    Yes.

Gruden is just the big name coach.....sure he won a super bowl, had a lot of winning seasons, and is from Ohio. All that is appealing to Browns fans.

What if Jim Harbaugh came to coach the Browns....coach against his brother.

The thing is what is the best option for the Browns....do you try and hire a head coach that has proven himself, or do you go after a coordinator/college head coach with very little to no head coaching experience in the NFL. I personally feel like the Browns are just too disfunctional to hire a a non proven head coach AGAIN.....we need a veteran head coach that knows exactly how to run and coach a profesional football team.

Fuck no on a college coach imo.

in my mind....Gruden is an awful lot like Cholly Weis....

he was in the right place at the right time to pad his resume and his reputation....
the TB job had more to do with his predecessor than his own work...

the interesting thing....I think even he realized that he had risen to the level of his own incompetence....and despite his relatively young age he bailed for the broadcast booth.

that says it all in my book.

He built the raiders into a good team then was basically traded to the bucs and won a superbowl that year with a team that always fell short with dungy. If you think hes bad you must think dungy sucks

Gruden WON a Super Bowl. I don't give a fuck who's players he won it with. HE WON A SUPER BOWL.

Also, people are so quick to point out his Tampa Bay days, but a lot of that was with the FO as well.

Jon Gruden also BUILT UP that Oakland Raiders team. The same team he beat in the Super Bowl. He brought the Raiders out of the dumps.

His resume speaks for itself. I want Gruden more than any other candidate, but the most important thing is getting a guy here that is the right hire.
