2011 Cincinnati Bengals Off-Season

    Free Agents in 2011

    Benson
    Cosby
    Fanene
    Brandon Johnson
    Dhani Jones
    Joseph
    Leonard
    Livings
    Mathis
    Ndukwe
    TO
    Roy Williams

    Restricted FA
    Cook
    Roland

Also, Bengals deny two year extension on Andre Smith, he is with club till 2012 and they save 16 million on his 42 million contract. Mikey hammered him with incentives and roster bonuses, Smith didn't deliver.

Club option on Ocho Cinco for 6 million, Palmer 11.5 million

    My best guess,
Bengals try to re-sign, Mathis (2-3 years), Livings (2-3 years), Roy Williams for one year, half hearted effort on Jonathan Joseph, heavy in incentives but not too much money guaranteed, so he is gone. Fanene, midlevel cash but again someone else pays him money and he's gone. Benson is a 50/50, rumor was he was out last year, so I venture he is gone as well.

Bengals also try with Cook and Roland, get Roland for 2 years, Cook turns down and plays out his last year.

Bengals now have to move Rivers to Middle LB, and must draft LOLB
add RB and Corner to list of positions they are short in. Free agent RB to supplement BScott and who they draft.
Ocho at 6m is not worth the money, but they pick up option to avoid cap hit.

All in all, this team is going to be thinner at all skill positions and on the line.
My optimism while minimal to begin with is waning.

Mikey will have to get real creative to add quality to the roster. The collective class of misfits and castoffs isn't as deep in years passed, so we will have to build through the draft and the slim pickings on the fa wire.

Wow thats a lot of FAs. I have a sneaking suspicion the bengals are looking at Cam Newton, just a feeling/hunch.

Do you think Ocho will be back?
  • Commander of Awesome
    He's not signed?

    edit, saw the club option.

Ocho doesn't really bring much positive to the team at this point outside of celebrity. Seeing how the team isn't selling out anymore. Figure they will need him to put buts in the seats.

    Oops, missed that part.

If Benson goes, I would love to see the Bengals make a run at Jason Snelling or Rashad Jennings. Free agent options at RB are plentiful, you definitely need a bruiser though. Bernard Scott needs touches but he is a chronic fumbler and is small, which makes me wonder how many games he could be productive in.

Bengals need to shelve idea of veteran free agent WR's. Time to develop the guys you drafted. Would be nice to have Maurice Purify back on the roster, but they had to make room for Antonio Bryant, then TO.

I could see the Bengals exercising their option on Ocho, then trading him. I think that would allow them to at least get a mid-round pick in a trade, as someone will take Ocho for 6 million. Question is, do they keep Palmer and draft AJ Green or do they draft a QB and go w/ the receivers they have with a rookie QB??
  • justincredible
I think they'll draft a QB and keep Palmer around one year to groom him.

Is Ocho playing Sunday or is he out again? If he's out, I'm curious to see what Palmer does with the young receivers against another good defense.

Running back should be able to pick one up if Ced goes. I think we keep Chad why wouldn't we and who would want him? Be interesting to see all the changes this summer. I'll be ready to get back to winning ways in 2011.
I think Chad is questionable at this point but isn't everyone?

I don't think the Bengals draft a quarterback this year. If they do, it will be a round 5 6 or 7 guy. Palmer is signed through 2014 and the Brown family isn't one to let players out of contractual obligations, nor are they known for eating contracts (Antonio Bryant is the only exception). Palmer is the quarterback of this team alone until at least 2013 and the Bengals don't draft a qb in a round higher than 3 over the next two/three drafts.

I also don't believe they draft a top flight wide receiver in the draft this year. They have had so many issues with the pass rush, and in their ability to create pressure it is too easy to draft DaQuan Bowers from Clemson. The pay grade for a DE is also significantly less than a WR, and given what the Bengals have done with free agent vet receivers they will likely let their rookies, and Chad Ochocinco try to resurrect Palmer's passing game.

    Bengals draft
    1-DaQuan Bowers
    2-Safety
3-RB or CB if there is a serviceable player available
4-LOLB or ROLB guessing Dhani Jones isn't re-signed and they move Rivers to MLB where he belongs.
5-OL inevitable departure of Cook forces Cincy to draft a center.
6-Here's your QB. Not gonna get Andrew Luck here. Maybe Jeremiah Masoli ugh
7-K (got to have someone compete with Nugent)

I would say Mark Ingram for the Bengals but not with that first spot.

Trade down and add picks and then take him.

Bengals need some new identity players and playmakers, quite frankly.

I think its time for Ocho to go. He hardly produced at all this year. As much as I love T.O., I dont think we can re-sign him either. Id like to see them keep benson. The D is good IMO, except I think the secondary could be improved in the draft. The D was just decimated by injuries this year. I say draft a good value QB mid round for a decent backup to Palmer and give him one more year to see how he does. Carson played his best ball of the year last week. Why? I think it is because he didnt have a go-to guy to look for. He could read the field and hit the open man.

Something I've noticed lately is that you really dont need elite receivers to have a good passing attack. The Patriots offense took off after they got rid of Moss, they have no real big name guy. It seems a bunch of nobodies are catching touchdowns from peyton manning now. The giants have a solid young recieving corp and a pretty good passing game when eli is playing decent. I think the same can be said about Saints as well..they really dont have a go to guy.

Maybe I am missing something, but Rivers has never played MLB. Are you talking about Maualuga, if so I agree he will be the MLB next year and for years to come.

My take on some of the things discussed in this thread:

I don't see the Bengals drafting a QB now that Carolina has said they want one. If they do, I think it will be in round 2 or 3. Maybe someone like Gabbert. No way they take someone in the late rounds. They have Lefevour that they are working to develop already.

Rey is the one moving to MLB. That's his true position and he's been playing out of position his whole career. Hopefully he will play better now that he doesn't have to drop into coverage so much.

Ced is gone. It's been discussed around here a lot and he wants a multi year deal at 5+ mil a year. He will get it but not in Cincy.

Ocho at 6mil? no way. Also, nobody is going to trade for him. Why would a team do that when TO is going to be available for a couple mil again?

I really hope Roy Williams doesn't come back. He's too limited and just can't stay on the field. Not worth it to me.

I think they will franchise JJo. He would be overpaid but they can't afford to lose him. That would put a big hit in season ticket sales IMO.

I thought a heard something about Hall also being a FA? Is that after next season?
  • Red Saul
One mock I saw earlier has them taking AJ Green in the 1st and Pat Devlin in the 2nd.
  • swamisez
Yes, Maulauga to MLB, I brain farted on Rivers moving.

As far as the AJ Green thing goes, I think he could be a great player and they have had some success with players from Georgia (Thurman, Pollack, Geathers). I think it is feasible, but wouldn't be shocked if they went with Patrick Peterson from LSU if he was available at 3. Would be convenient since tagging JonJo all but means he is gone after the season ala Andrews, Smith.

Can someone merge that other thread into here?

Anyways, Bengals get the #4 pick. http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/26824198?source=rss_teams_Washington_Redskins

Buffalo at #3 even though they beat Cincy since there was a 3 way tie. Carolina and Buffalo will be looking QB.

Why is it I am thinking if Marvin stays Bratkowski stays as well?
I want Brat gone, and there is no reason for him to still be here after the showing the last two years.

The Bengals are either going to hire a new coach or Lewis is going to take a new job before the Bengals announce their intentions with him. His contract is already up, there is a good chance the Bengals just never say anything. He is technically not even the head coach there anymore

Makes me wonder what type of person they get. I'd like to say someone with previous experience but I think they get a coordinator....
  • dave
If it's a coordinator that isn't Zimmer that would be a shame IMO.
