IIHF (Hockey) World U20 Championship - Dec. 26-Jan. 5

Wasn't sure where to put this as there are a mix of amateur and professional players on these teams. USA won their opening game last night in overtime over Finland, 3-2, as Nick Bjugstad hit the game-winner. Last year, Team USA beat Canada in Saskatchewan, in dramatic fashion, to halt their streak of 5 straight championships.

Games are all on NHL Network:
    12/26 USA 3 Finland 2 (OT)
    12/28 USA vs Slovakia
    12/30 USA vs Germany
    12/31 USA vs Switzerland

    1/2 Quarterfinals
    1/3 Semifinals
    1/5 Finals

Team USA features 3 CCHA players (Brown, Merrill from Michigan, Johns from Notre Dame). Keep an eye on Jerry D'Amigo - he's pretty good and should make noise in the NHL sooner rather than later.

Blue Jackets fans: you can get a glimpse of the future when 2010 first-rounder Ryan Johansen (number 19) suits up for team Canada. He had one goal and 7 shots on goal in Canada's win over Russia yesterday.

The US rolled to a 6-1 win over Slovakia yesterday, Canada a 7-2 win over the Czechs.

    USA just dominated the Slovaks.

Did I read that they outshot them 22-1 in the first period? That is total domination.
  • End of Line
    Yes.

It's gonna be a USA/Canada final again this year.

Canada loses in a shootout to Sweden, meaning they'll have to play an extra game in the knockout round.

    I'm glad about that.

Is Markstrom still playing for Sweden?

USA-Canada semifinal is tonight, 7:30pm on NHL Network. Shame that it's not the final.

    USA!!!

USA is getting embarrassed. They look like shit. Actually Canada's defense looks really good. USA can barely cross the blue line without Canada forcing a turnover.
  • gorocks99
Yeah. Crap game from the US last night. They couldn't handle the Canadians forecheck at ALL.

Russia scores 5 third period goals to win the gold over Canada, 5-3. Schadenfreude!

BTW, USA wins bronze over the Swedes.

EPIC collapse by those Canucks ;)
